Red-headed bites

Harpactes erythrocephalus

Red-headed biting quail, belongs to the vertebrate, ornithischia, biting cuckoo, biting cuckoo family. It is a national second-level protected animal, often living in a primitive broad-leaved forest, and is mainly distributed in Yunnan, Fujian, Guangdong, Sichuan and other places. Photo taken at Ruili.

The red-headed biting crayon has a bright body color, and the male has a burgundy head, which is also the origin of its name. Its neck , thorax and head are a shade of colour , with a slightly pale color. Near the abdomen, there is a white stripe that isolates the crimson color of the lower body very well. The whole color transition is very natural. The biggest difference between females and males is that the head, neck, throat, chest and back of the female are rusty brown. Apparently, the red-headed biting crane in the photo is a male bird.

Most of the birds in the family Crateridae are high-looking, with bright plumage, especially the grey-breasted biting thrush in Malaysia. There are only 1 genus and 3 species in the Chinese family, and the other two species are orange-breasted biting crane and red-bellied biting crane, which are national second-level protected animals.

They often inhabit tropical rainforests and secondary evergreen broad-leaved forests, and are omnivorous birds that eat wild fruits and also eat insects such as locusts and praying mantises. Adult red-headed gnaws are similar in size to pigeons, but they do not like pigeons to live in groups, they are more like "social phobia patients", prefer to be single and often stand still on the branches.

"The weird thing is that their body color is very recognizable in the primeval forest, but the truth is that they are usually difficult to find." Photographer Dong Lei said that the red-headed biting crane rarely makes a noisy chirp when it roosts, but is unusually quiet. However, once the red-headed biting crane moved, it seemed that it did not need to prepare, and suddenly activated the ability to fly, "and then disappeared all at once." "As a result, it's hard for the photography world to capture what they look like when they're flying.
