Dunhuang is located at the strategic point of the Silk Road, which is not only a transit point for trade between the East and the West, but also a meeting point for religious, cultural and intellectual information. The 492 caves of Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes are famous for their statues and murals, which show the history of exchanges between Chinese art and western art, and are representatives and symbols of the excellent traditional culture of the Chinese nation. On the morning of September 28th, as one of the series of activities to welcome the landing of China's first cultural tourism expo in Wuhan, the "Millennium Silk Road , Dream of the Yangtze River - Dunhuang Mural Art Public Welfare Tour Exhibition" opened in the Yangtze River Civilization Hall of Wuhan Garden Expo Park.

The exhibition is sponsored by Dunhuang Research Institute, China Dunhuang Grottoes Conservation and Research Foundation and other units, exhibiting 66 fine murals of Dunhuang Grottoes digital high-fidelity reproduction, 1:1 reproduction of 3 grottoes and 2 painted sculptures, 20 sets of costumes imitated according to Dunhuang mural costumes, replicas of sutra scrolls excavated from Dunhuang Tibetan Scripture Caves, as well as related multimedia works, Dunhuang documentaries, etc. The exhibition uses immersive technology and intelligent audio guide system to truly reproduce the real scene of the cave.

Since the end of the last century, the Dunhuang Research Institute has begun the exploration and practice of "digital Dunhuang", using digital technology to preserve cultural relics information. With the rapid development of photography technology, digital scanning and output technology, multimedia technology, animation and other technologies, Dunhuang Research Institute has successfully used the digital resources of Dunhuang Grottoes to produce high-fidelity reproduction murals, 3D printing color sculptures, ultra-high-definition dome movies, Dunhuang cultural animation works and so on.

The Dunhuang Mural Art Charity Tour exhibition will display the achievements of Dunhuang Research Institute's digital practice for many years, and share with the audience the results of the deep integration of modern science and technology and traditional culture. The exhibition of these excellent works allows the audience to enjoy dunhuang art thousands of miles away without going far.

The 66 digital high-fidelity reproduction murals on display are all printed out on rice paper after digital high-precision photography collection, image stitching processing, positioning correction, color correction, and a picture is often spliced with hundreds of photos, which is clearer than tourists going to the cave site to play flashlights, and more details can be seen. The content and color of the copied mural art are highly restored, giving people an immersive feeling.

Interpreting Dunhuang art's animation, film and television works, mainly displaying the mural stories of the Mogao Caves such as "sacrificing oneself to feed the tiger", "descending demons to become enlightened", "Tang monks taking the scriptures", etc., so that the pictures painted on the wall are "alive", and the virtual roaming of the real scene of the cave is truly reproduced by vr virtual roaming technology.
