The Ministry of National Defense responds to US arms sales to Taiwan: it will take all necessary measures to firmly defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity

Q: The US Defense and Security Cooperation Agency issued a press release on August 4 saying that the US State Department has approved the sale of self-propelled howitzer systems and related equipment totaling about US$750 million to Taiwan.

A: This act by the US side disregards international law and the basic norms governing international relations, seriously violates the one-China principle and the provisions of the three Sino-US joint communiques, grossly interferes in China's internal affairs, harms China's sovereignty and security interests, sends the wrong signal to the "Taiwan independence" separatist forces, and endangers the security and stability of the Taiwan Strait region. China expresses its strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to this.

The Taiwan issue concerns China's core interests. The Chinese side strongly demands that the US side keep its promises, strictly abide by the provisions of the three Sino-US joint communiques, especially the "August 17" communique, prudently and properly handle Taiwan-related issues, and stop arms sales to Taiwan and US-Taiwan military ties, so as not to further damage Sino-US relations between the two militaries and the peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait region.

Chinese the People's Liberation Army has the determination, will, and ability to resolutely thwart any form of interference by external forces and "Taiwan independence" separatist attempts, and will take all necessary measures to firmly safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
