Before Yan Yu, Ma Zhong, Zhang Yi, and other generals of the late Shu Han Dynasty served as the governor of Shu Dynasty. On the basis of the Shu-Wu alliance, Yan Yu, who was the right general of the Shu Han Dynasty, led 5,000 troops to strengthen the defense of the Bai Emperor's city in Zhenshu in order to support Eastern Wu when needed. A year later, Emperor Yong'an returned to Chengdu due to illness, and the Shu Han court appointed Yan Yu as the Governor of Yong'an. As far as the Governor of Yong'an was concerned, in the second year of the Shu Han Dynasty (222), Liu Bei failed to defeat Wu in the Battle of Yiling, was defeated by the Wu general Lu Xun, and retreated to Yong'an, and the situation was still very grim. On this basis, Liu Bei soon built the city of Yong'an and also established the Governor of Yong'an.

For the Yong'an governor of Shu Han, because it was located at the junction of Shu Han and Eastern Wu, its strategic position was very important. Before Yan Yu, Li Yan, Chen Zhi, and other Shu Han dynasty ministers served as governors of Yong'an. After Yan Yu, Luo Xian defended Yong'an and repelled Eastern Wu's attack after the fall of Shu Han. In 258 CE, the Shu Han Shangshu ordered Chen Qi to die, and the eunuch Huang Hao was able to control the imperial government because he gained the trust of the empress dowager Liu Chan. For Huang Hao, he rejected Jiang Weishuhan's loyal generals. However, Yan Yu chose to tie the knot and attach himself to Huang Hao. However, Yan Yu did not reject loyal and virtuous talents like Huang Hao. For example, for Luo Xian, who was demoted by Huang Hao to the position of Taishou of Padang County, Yan Yu chose to appoint Luo Xian as his leader and deputy.

Finally, in 263 AD, Sima Zhao, who held the power of Cao Wei, launched a war against Shu. In this great battle, Jiang Wei, Liao Hua and others led an army to resist Zhong Hui. However, the large army led by Deng Ai penetrated deep into the hinterland of the Shu Han Dynasty and posed a threat to the capital Chengdu. At this critical moment, the later lord Liu Chan ordered Yan Yu to lead his troops west to the rescue, and Yan Yu left 2,000 troops to order Luo Xian to guard Yong'an City and personally lead the Rest of the people to the west to rescue Chengdu. However, before Yan Yu's army arrived in Chengdu, the later lord Liu Chan surrendered to Deng Ai. After the fall of the Shu Han Dynasty, the fate of Jiang Wei, Liao Hua, Zhang Yi and other Shu Han generals is recorded in historical records, but for yan Yu, who rescued the capital Chengdu, it is missing.
