Polanski plays a Pole named Tarkovsky, a migrant worker who comes to Paris, France, to work alone, hoping to rent a cheap apartment.
In an old apartment building, a woman named Simon Shaw fell and was seriously injured after jumping off a building, lying alone in the Hospital of Bridoni.
Because the house she lived in was uninhabited for a long time, it was taken out by the landlord Mr. Zi for rent.
Tarkovsky wanted to rent the apartment, so he negotiated the price with Mr. Zi, but Mr. Zi finally said that he could only rent the apartment until Miss Shaw was breathless.
Tarkovsky then went to visit Miss Shaw at the Hospital of Bridoni and saw that she was tied up in gauze like a mummy.
Miss Shaw's girlfriend Stella (Adjani) also visits her, tarkovsky and Stella have a speculative conversation, and the two meet for a meal and a movie.
They watch bruce Lee's "Dragon Fights Tiger Fight", and Stella is emotionally aroused in the middle.
Soon Miss Shaw was out of breath, and Tarkovsky moved into the apartment where Miss Shaw had lived.
Mr. Landlord Zi repeatedly warned him to keep quiet and not to bring women into the house so as not to affect others.
Tarkovsky triumphantly invited some of his fox friends to his home to celebrate the housewarming, only to be quickly knocked on the door by a neighbor to warn him.
Tarkovsky himself felt embarrassed, and when he met Mr. Zi the next morning, he apologized to him and promised that there would be no next time.
But Tarkovsky still feels very unaccustomed to living in the house, and in addition to not having a separate bathroom, he often sees neighbors watching him.
The room was also full of strangeness, he found a hole in the wall, there was a tooth in it, and the room still had the clothes that Miss Xiao had worn.
One night a man named George Barda came to see Miss Shaw, and when he heard of her death, Barda burst into tears in the room.
Afraid of affecting his neighbors again, Tarkovsky took Bada out for a drink.
When Tarkovsky returned home, he found that his home had been stolen, and his only tv set, camera, and suitcase were stolen.
Tarkovsky originally wanted to call the police, but was stopped by Mr. Zi on the grounds that he could not affect the reputation of the apartment building because of his personal affairs.
Mr. Zi also warned him not to forget his identity as an outsider, since it would not be good for him to provoke the police.
Before leaving, Mr. Zi also told him to change his slippers after 10 o'clock in the evening so that he would not make any noise.
Soon after, a neighbor, Mrs. Theoz, came to Tarkovsky and asked him to sign a petition protesting the incomprehensible Mrs. Gadrian, who was preparing to jointly drive Mrs. Gadrian away.
Tarkovsky refused to sign the letter because he did not know Madame Gadrian.
Madame Theoz left angrily, and because of this, Tarkovsky became the object of disgust among her neighbors.
After living in this building, Tarkovsky always felt very depressed, and the neighbors were cold to him, as if everyone was crowding him out.
Tarkovsky did not feel a little kindness, and over time his spirit began to become out of order.
Someone went to the police station to complain about Tarkovsky making noise, so he was summoned to the police station.
It turned out that his neighbor had written a joint whistleblower letter against him, which showed that Tarkovsky had also become a target of exclusion.
He began to get nervous, he also suffered from hysteria, began to hallucinate, and could even see the dead old homeowner Miss Shaw smiling at him.
Tarkovsky was insane, and he put on the clothes that Miss Shaw had left behind, dressing himself up as a woman.
After running madly into the street and being hit by a car, Tarkovsky was sent back to the apartment, but that night he changed into a woman's clothes and jumped out of the window where Miss Shaw had jumped.
The neighbors witnessed all this, but none of them came forward to help them until Tarkovsky himself climbed upstairs again and jumped out of the window again and fell seriously injured.
Pigo really feels very uncomfortable seeing this ending, and the film uses an exaggerated way to show the indifference of those around him, which is creepy and chilling, and feels that it is very realistic.
In fact, Pi Ge also associated with Mr. Lu Xun's "Diary of a Madman", the male protagonist in the novel is also a crazy person, from his eyes to see a cold cannibalistic world, and the world in "Strange Tenant" is not this kind of situation, maybe the art of directly hitting the heart is the same!
The film explores the relationship between people and their surroundings, a person goes to an unfamiliar environment, and only by adapting to that environment can he change that environment.
If a person cannot adapt to the environment, and is restricted and rejected by the environment, then the person will definitely go to a tragic fate.
Like Tarkovsky in the film, he tried very hard to fit into that environment at first, but his neighbors did not accept him.
Not only that, but the pathological living environment slowly turned Tarkovsky into a neurosis, so he had only one way to die in the end.
