LAUSANNE, June 8 (Xinhua) -- The Executive Committee of the International Olympic Committee held a meeting on June 8, at which the list of refugee delegations for the Tokyo Olympic Games was officially approved, and a total of 29 athletes will participate in 12 events in Tokyo.

IOC President Bach said the appearance of refugee athletes from around the globe on the stage at the Tokyo Olympics was a powerful message of unity, resilience and hope for the world.
According to reports, at the Tokyo Olympics, the 29 athletes will participate in the competition under the Olympic flag; at the opening ceremony on July 23, they will enter the venue for the second time after the Greek delegation; 6 of these 29 people have participated in the Rio Olympics.

At the 2016 Rio Olympics, the IOC formed its first refugee delegation, when 10 athletes competed. In 2018, the IOC decided to follow this practice at the Tokyo Olympics and created the Olympic Refugee Athletes Funding Program, which has funded 56 eligible refugee athletes to help them continue their sporting careers.
According to information released by the International Olympic Committee, the athletes of the refugee delegation will assemble in Doha, Qatar, from July 12 to 13 and depart for Japan on July 14.
