There are also 26 species of Australian endangered mammals, more than 230 species of birds and nearly 150 species of reptiles. It is also an important breeding and growth site for fish, crustaceans and coelenterates. There are 323 species of fish, including many sharks and cartilaginous fishes.
Declared a World Heritage Site in 1991, Shark Bay covers an area of approximately 23,000 square kilometres and contains a number of protected areas and reserves, including Shark Bay Marine Park, François Peren National Park, Hamarin Pond Marine Nature Reserve and many protected islands.
