About the author

Yevgeny m. Ratchev

Born in Russia in 1906. He lived with his grandmother in Baraguskaya, the Siberian steppe, until the age of 14, and his childhood in the savannah allowed him to be related to wild animals and plants, and he had a very deep understanding of their ecology.

In 1920, Rachev went alone to Novonossk on the Black Sea coast to join his mother and became interested in poetry and painting. In 1924, he entered the Normal School of Fine Arts, which determined his future.

In 1930, Rachev went to work in the fine arts department of the Kiev Publishing House and began to create illustrations. With the help of senior editors, he gained a better understanding of the characteristics of children's book illustration. He learned that in addition to understanding and caring for children, respect for literary works is also important. During his work, he often went to the zoo or the forbidden fishing area to sketch, and gradually established his "realistic and delicate" creative attitude.

Rachev's works are mostly based on folk tales related to nature and animals. His paintings are characterized by the vividness of animals, often with simple lines, showing the most vivid expressions of animals. In addition, his animals have obviously anthropomorphic personalities, and usually he will put them in costumes with national flavors to show the characteristics of the nation and the human characteristics reflected behind the animal stories.

Reading value

The magic of imagination: lifelike graphics, a tight storyline, and a warm world in a little glove

With nature as the background, in each picture, the gloves change like a house, and this imagination of details and ingenious design show the extraordinary expressiveness of the pictorial calligrapher as a "storyteller with pictures". Evgeny m. Rachev is a representative of the picture book writers of the former Soviet Union, and his realistic painting techniques and imaginative cleverly blended picture book representation are also highly praised internationally.

This is folklore from Russia's neighbor Ukraine. On a snowy day in the middle of winter, a pair of gloves is thrown on a snowy field, and an unexpected story begins with this very ordinary picture. The gloves were accidentally dropped by an old man walking his dog. Hungry rats burrowed into the gloves, followed by big jumping frogs, rabbits that ran fast, foxes who liked to dress up, big wolves with gray hair, and wild boars with fangs, all came one after another, and they also wanted to go into the gloves. Somehow they all got in. At this time, a slow-moving bear also came and wanted to go in. Although there is no picture of seven animals in the gloves, it is more pleasant to imagine this picture.

Picture books vividly reflect the characteristics of each animal, and when we read aloud, it seems that these animals appear in front of our eyes, and the story is so pleasantly carried out. It is unreasonable that a small glove can fit seven animals, but the painter calmly and naturally accommodates them through the picture, and I really admire the painter's creative talent. The absurd story of seven animals larger than gloves getting into small gloves is set in the cold winter when the animals burrow into warm gloves to keep warm. This story will resonate with children and feel "too good". And it is difficult for a dead-hearted adult to appreciate the absurd pleasure of "a lie come true".

At the moment when the children sincerely lamented "great", the old man and the dog returned to find gloves. So the animals ran out of their gloves and fled into the forest, and the story ended in amazement. This abrupt ending surprised the children, and at the same time they were relieved. This is the logic of the illogical story. The children sighed and rejoiced in a series of unexpected pleasures.

How big the imagination is, how big the world is

How can a small glove hold so many big animals? We adults think it's incredible, but children enjoy it because there is a magical imagination that works magic! Children follow the tight plot of the picture book and enjoy the magical story brought by the imagination. In reading, we must protect the imagination of children, when they say some seemingly absurd conjectures, do not rush to deny, patiently listen to their reasons, maybe there will be unexpected gains. Maybe one day, the child's imagination will really become a reality! Bold imagination is an indispensable magic weapon to the vast world.

Follow the rhythm of the child and do not rush to explain

In the process of reading, the child's eyes are really very powerful. When a child finds a bell hanging on the porch, he will wonder: Where did the bell come from? Who got this bell, and who hung it here? Who nailed the bell... These are all things that are not in the text. The child's discovery inspires and guides us to take a closer look at the picture. We can also find that the "glove house" is not only hung with bells, but also ladders, porches and very artistic windows. This actually means that the animals are carefully building their homes.

Feel the superb art of dialogue in picture books

The small animals in the picture book introduce themselves with the same sentence pattern but highlight their own characteristics. The little mouse says, "I'm a little mouse with pointed claws," the frog says, "I'm a bouncing frog," the rabbit says , "I'm a fast-running rabbit," and the fox says " I love to dress up." The fox does not directly praise his beauty, but says "I am a fox who loves to dress up", the language is euphemistic and subtle. And with the development of the storyline, the tone of the small animals can also reflect the changes in their psychological activities.
