"The culture of Chinese medicine has a long history and has been carried forward by the inheritance of generations of doctors." Li Feng, dean of the School of Traditional Chinese Medicine of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, introduced that in ancient times, Traditional Chinese medicine education was mainly a way of master-apprentice inheritance or parallel official learning. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the higher education system of traditional Chinese medicine was established. As the first batch of higher education institutions of traditional Chinese medicine in China, the predecessors of the North Chinese Medicine School at the beginning of its establishment combined with the model of modern higher education and proposed a higher education model with chinese medicine characteristics that combines institutional education and teacher education.
The mode of higher education in TCM has tried five-year, six-year, seven-year, eight-year and nine-year systems. A five-year undergraduate is the basic model and is very mature. Through five years of study and practice, students can have perfect knowledge and technology of traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine, and have the ability to obtain the qualification of physician.
The current long-term study system is carried out in the "5+3" model, and students enter the professional master's training stage after the end of undergraduate study. Through three years, complete the standardized training of resident physicians and the scientific research training of professional masters. At the time of graduation, the Chinese medicine practitioner qualification certificate, the training certificate, the professional master's degree certificate and the graduation certificate are all available. Li Feng said that this long-term education model can enable students to improve their scientific research literacy while completing the training, and they can also start as soon as possible and continue to receive teacher education for many years.
Beijing University of Chinese Medicine also launched the first model of traditional Chinese medicine majors to be the first in the country to produce a nine-year continuous system of undergraduate and doctoral studies. Through the nine-year consistent system of training, students obtain the physician qualification certificate, complete the standardized training of resident physicians, and obtain a doctorate degree in traditional Chinese medicine. The nine-year consistent training model means that students should be exposed to the classics earlier, to the clinic earlier, and to scientific research earlier, so that they can reach the doctoral level in a shorter period of time. Li Feng believes that this kind of integrated education has opened up the boundaries of undergraduate and graduate training, and also broken the barriers of disciplines through the opening of a large number of innovative integration courses, and built a more integrated, practical, efficient and cutting-edge teaching system for students' future clinical, scientific research and career development needs.
"The training mode of the long-term study system shortens the cycle of talent training, increases the depth of talent training, and improves the level of talent training." Compared with the segmented training of postgraduate education after five-year education, its advantages are more like 'early start,' early overall planning, early development, early inheritance, deep training, and high efficiency.' Li Feng said.
