Pei Xiu proposed that the early establishment of the crown prince was a matter of great importance. Emperor Xuanzong said, "If you build a prince, you will become an idle person." Frightened, Pei Xiu no longer dared to speak about the matter of the prince, and the matter of establishing the crown prince was thus postponed.
In August of the thirteenth year of Da Zhong (859 AD), Tang Xuanzong was poisoned by taking Dan medicine, gangrene on his back, and seeing that his life was not long away, Tang Xuanzong finally made up his mind and secretly summoned the privy envoys (eunuchs) Wang Guichang, Ma Gongru, and Wang Jufang, the envoy of Xuanhui Nanyuan, to make Li Zi the prince of The Emperor.
These three people were all valued by Emperor Xuanzong on a daily basis, of course, according to Xuanzong's wishes. But they had a concern, at that time, Wang Zongshi, a lieutenant in the left army who had real power, did not have a heart with them, this Wang Zongshi was a eunuch, he dared to say and do, he dared to do it, he was bold and strategic, he held the military power, he controlled the forbidden army of the palace, he was a difficult person to deal with, the three were worried that Wang Zongshi would obstruct from it, and they decided to transfer him out of Kyoto and transfer him to huainan to supervise the army, so that several of them could handle things calmly. At this time, the emperor had already returned to heaven, so they forged a holy will, and while sending someone to read to Wang Zongshi the false holy will of transferring the lieutenant of the left army to the Huainan overseer, they also discussed arranging funeral rites and establishing reserves.
This eunuch Wang Zongshi was a man of courage and courage, and he felt that it was difficult to distinguish between the truth and falsity of this holy will, so he decided to go to the holy side to distinguish between true and false, and it was not too late to go. When Wang Zongshi arrived at the palace, he heard a cry coming from inside the sleeping hall, and it turned out that the emperor had returned to heaven. Wang Guichang, Ma Gongru, and Wang Jufang were arranging the aftermath in the palace, preparing to support Li Zi, the Prince of Li, to inherit the throne. When this Wang Zongshi saw this situation, he already understood in his heart, so he loudly rebuked the three of them, saying that the Holy Driver had died, so why didn't he first warn the world? But you are so sneaky, engaging in conspiracies and tricks behind your back, what do you really want to do? And he took out the holy will and said, when the emperor is dying, where did this holy will come from? Obviously you're ghosting. Consider for yourselves what is the sin of falsely preaching the Holy Will? When these three people saw Wang Zongshi, their hearts had already been empty for a few points, and they were exposed for the trick of forging the holy will, and they became more and more weak-hearted, so they had to kneel on the ground and beg for forgiveness. Wang Zongshi said: Standing up for a long time is caused by ancient and modern times. Since you know it wrong. Just follow me to meet the new emperor, maybe I can make up for it. The three had to agree. Therefore, Wang Zongshi sent someone to receive Li Wen, and drew up an edict to establish a crown edict, renaming Li Wen li yi. The next day, Li Yi ascended the throne as Emperor Yizong of Tang. Soon, Tang Yizong issued a holy decree, arresting Wang Guichang, Ma Gongru, and Wang Jufang, and executing them on the same day, accused of forging the holy will.
