On August 30, 2018, David West announced his retirement on Twitter, ending his 15-year career.
West wrote on his own Twitter: "I've been lucky enough to be able to fulfill my childhood dream of playing in the NBA. After 15 seasons, I decided to retire. On March 24, 2011, during a game against the Jazz, West sprained his knee with a dunk and fell to the ground in pain. After an examination, West's cruciate ligament in his knee was torn and the season was reimbursed. Since that season, West's performance has begun to decline.
On June 25, 2015, West chose to jump out of his contract with the Pacers, forfeiting his final year's $12.6 million contract to become a free agent. The reason why West gave up tens of millions of annual salary is to pursue the championship. So he joined the Spurs with a basic salary, but he failed to do so at the Spurs.
