At the Bandung Conference in April 1955, Premier Zhou Enlai's wonderful speech touched the world and went down in history, and the on-site English translator at that time, the young Pu Shouchang, was indispensable.

Pu Shouchang was born in 1922 in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province. In 1941, he went to the United States to study, with excellent results, and obtained a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan and a master's degree and a doctorate from Harvard University. He joined the Communist Party of the United States in May 1944, transferred to the Communist Party of China in 1945, and returned to the motherland after the founding of New China. Prior to the Bandung Conference, he participated in the Korean Armistice Negotiations at Panmunjom as a member of the Chinese Volunteer Army Negotiating Delegation, and in 1954 he was secretary of the Office of Premier Zhou Enlai at the Geneva Conference on North Korea and Vietnam.

At the Bandung conference, Pu Shouchang carefully prepared materials and carefully understood Premier Zhou Enlai's intentions. Zhou Enlai's words were not impassioned, let alone the lightning and thunder that some people imagined, his humble and courteous, calm tone, coupled with Pu Shouchang's pure, soft, clear and accurate on-site English translation, added a lot of color to the speech, so that people in different languages can feel the gentleness and sincerity of New China.
