2020: From the Great Waves of the Ice Sea to the Sunken Island

The fierce thunder announced that summer had arrived as promised. The past July was a fierce summer slot. But fans who are now eagerly awaiting the news of the resumption of work in the theaters are still not waiting for the news that this summer day is destined to be no better than usual.

However, while missing the theater, this month's streaming media is in full swing. Over the next seven days, we'll witness Apple TV+'s heavily procured Greyhound, Masaaki Yuasa's new sci-fi anime series that has teamed up with Netflix again, and The Broadway hit "Hamilton," which is the first serious collaboration with a mainstream platform.

From the raging Waves of the Atlantic Ocean to the sunken islands of Japan, these images and stories seem to echo the plague we are suffering today. 2020 is also halfway through, and I hope you can have a smooth second half.

2020: From the Great Waves of the Ice Sea to the Sunken Island

At the beginning of the year, Apple made the largest ever movie purchase for its Apple TV+: buying Tom From Sony. Tom Hanks starred in and wrote the World War II-themed film The Greyhound. In this film, Hanks plays George Klaus, a former commander of the Navy destroyer Greyhound during the Atlantic Naval Battle. Based on historical facts, the film tells the story of the Greyhound's dangerous mission across the Atlantic Ocean during World War II and dealing with Nazi warships. Apple allegedly paid Sony a hefty fee of about $70 million for the film's 15-year streaming rights. This is also the first time that Hanks has abandoned the big screen of cinema and let the film go directly to the streaming platform. In addition, Sony will retain the distribution rights of this film in China, so we may expect to see this work on the domestic screen. However, if you are not in a hurry, it is also a good choice to take a peek at Apple TV+.

Masaaki Yuasa has a new work! This time, Masaaki Yuasa once again cooperated with Netflix to direct the newly adapted animated series "Japan Sinks 2020". Adapted from Komatsu Sakyo's classic science fiction novel The Sinking of Japan, published in 1973, the drama is set in Tokyo just after the 2020 Olympic Games, telling the story of a Tokyo family of four who make life choices in the face of the imminent sinking of the Japanese archipelago. Judging from the stills previously released, the fictional Great Earthquake caused great damage to Tokyo, and the landmark Tokyo Tower was also seriously damaged, and the surrounding buildings were integrated into a sea of fire. The first season of "Japan Sinks 2020" is set for 10 episodes. It will be broadcast exclusively on AcFun at 18:00 on the same day.

2020: From the Great Waves of the Ice Sea to the Sunken Island

We didn't foresee recommending Broadway musicals in the Neo section, but after all, a popular show that is hard to find can be launched on mainstream streaming platforms, and it is not a wonderful thing that can be encountered every month. The Disney company bought the online rights to the famous musical "Hamilton" in February. As the epidemic continues to rage in Europe and the United States, its launch date has also been advanced from October next year to July 3 this year. Written and composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton, as its name suggests, tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, the founding father of the United States. The show won a record-breaking 16 Tony Award nominations in 2016 and eventually won 11 awards, including Musical of the Year (and the most expensive ticket on Broadway today). The film released this time is an officially recorded live version of the original card, not a film adapted from a musical. So rest assured, the tragedy of the movie version of Cats will not be repeated.

"Peter Lou" is the sequel to director Mike Leigh's biopic Mr. Turner. Turner) was followed by another historical drama. The launch of "Peter Lou" coincided with the 200th anniversary of the "1819 Peter Lou Massacre" in Britain. To remember the past, the film recalls the real-life events of the British Conservative Party's suppression of demonstrations and rallies in 1819. Funded by Amazon Studios, Film 4 and the British Film Institute (BFI), the film is director Mike Lee's most expensive film to date. The film was nominated for the Golden Lion at the 2018 Venice International Film Festival. A belated appearance on the streaming platform more than a year later offers history buffs a new incision for observation. Coincidentally, CC also launched Mike Lee's review unit on June 21, and interested friends can choose to watch it together.

Welcome to Chechnya

Welcome to Chechnya

Director: David Frans

Starring: Olga Baranova / David Estif / Maxim Rapunov

Genre: Documentary

Release date: 2020/6/30

Launch platform: HBO

2020: From the Great Waves of the Ice Sea to the Sunken Island

The documentary "Welcome to Chechnya," directed by Academy Award-nominated director David France, released its latest trailer last month. The documentary exposes atrocities against sexual minorities in Chechnya. Meanwhile, a group of activists active in the field of gender rights secretly rescue victims, provide them with safe shelter and visa assistance. At the Human Rights Watch Film Festival, which just ended in June, the documentary garnered widespread attention. Another aspect of the work that deserves our speculation is that in order to protect the interviewee, the film uses machine learning and algorithms to achieve face masking (simply put, face swapping). The 22 faces we see in the film are all real respondents who were replaced by blue-screen technology. This is a positive attempt by non-fiction images to integrate current technology with human demands.

Transit

Transit

Director: Christian Petzold

Starring: Franz Rogovsky / Paula Bell / Goldhard Gisse / Lillian Batman / Marianne Zari

Genre: Drama

Online platform: MUBI

2020: From the Great Waves of the Ice Sea to the Sunken Island

Christian Petzold just made a name for himself at the Berlin International Film Festival in the first half of this year with his new film Undine. This made his previous work "Transit" also return to the public's vision. MUBI will launch Petzord's work, which was nominated for the Golden Bear two years ago, in early July. The film is based on a 1942 wartime novel by the German writer Anna Seghers. However, the setting is transplanted to modern Marseille. Petzold's novel way of organizing images blends the past and the present, highlighting the confused dilemmas of war-displaced people and questioning the battle itself.

"Gold Thirst" is set in the United States during the Gold Rush. The story is based on one of the most famous gold mine legends in the history of the American gold rush: the Lost Dutchman's Gold Mine. The film follows two gold diggers into the mountains of Arizona, where the fable contains a huge amount of gold, and then presents an amazing adventure about the lust for wealth, love, betrayal and murder. Glenn Ford, a representative of Hollywood's golden age, starred in the role of the mysterious "German" in the legend. "GoldThirsty" is one of the classic works of CC's upcoming "Western Black" series, and the other 11 films in the same series will also be available for viewing on the platform. This includes classics such as Robert Wise's Blood on the Moon. Friends who like western, suspenseful genre movies should not miss it.

2020: From the Great Waves of the Ice Sea to the Sunken Island

The quality of the screening collections curated by CC has become a must-have track for the cinewoo editorial board every month. A collection of films composed by Ryuichi Sakamoto is another gold-laden feature of the month. The collection is particularly rich: from the original film version of "The Handmaid's Tale" in the 1990s to Almodóvar's famous "High Heels". Cinewoo recommends the 1999 work "Mifado" directed by Nagisa Oshima. The film needs to be carefully counted to be counted: the film not only takes you through the samurai culture of Kyoto under the Tokugawa shogunate in the 19th century, but also brings together the wonderful performances of Matsuda Ryuhei, Asano Tadanobu, and (at the time, middle-aged) Kitano Takeshi. In addition, the music of "Professor" really adds a lot to the film, and the OST of the whole film perfectly sets off the mysterious atmosphere of the story. In terms of lineup, it can be said that "Royal Law Degree" is definitely a full five-star level!
