It is usually said that in large treaty ports such as Shanghai, the social atmosphere, especially young people, is early in civilization, and free love and free marriage are not unusual.
However, in some mainland cities, free love is not necessarily so easy. For example, the combination of Shu Xincheng and Liu Jiqun in that year caused a huge storm.
Shu Xincheng, a native of Pupu, Hunan, is a modern publisher and educator. In 1924, he was invited by Wu Yuzhang to Chengdu to serve as a professor at the Higher Normal School.
During this period, Shu Xincheng became acquainted with Liu Fang (Liu Jiqun), a preparatory student of Chengdu High School. However, in fact, Liu Jiqun is not a student of Shu Xincheng, but because Shu Xincheng loves photography, the two became acquainted with photography.
Shu Xincheng once recalled afterwards:
"When they saw me with a camera, they asked me to take a picture of them, and I took a picture together... Five days is worth the same time, because their old classmate Liu Mouyue bought a new camera, and they will not use it. Let me guide you. ......”
The more contact, the closer the relationship between the two will gradually become closer. However, in general, the two were still normal male and female interactions at that time (Shu already had a wife and son), but later events changed the trajectory of their lives.
At that time, in Chengdu High School, Liu Liu Jiqun not only studied well, but also looked beautiful, called a school flower, and there were many suitors. However, love can easily turn into hate, and the pursuit of losers is always waiting to be vented, and the same-sex jealousy is even more so.
As for Shu Xincheng, he was a new school figure invited from Shanghai, with a monthly salary of 200 yuan, which was much more generous than that of ordinary teachers, which caused some people to envy and resent. In addition, Shu Xincheng often gives speeches inside and outside the school, which is also quite controversial.

Due to the above many factors, the interaction between Shu Xincheng and Liu Jiqun is also eye-catching. Rushu Xincheng recalled afterwards:
"She went back to me, and at that time I was already in the limelight and embarrassed, and she was so red that she was so red that it burned under the envy and hatred of ordinary people, and only when the salary dried to a considerable extent, it would naturally burn."
After that, the rumors about the "teacher-student love" between the two began to circulate in the school, which attracted the attention of all parties for a while.
On April 24, 1925, Fu Zidong, the principal of the High School, talked to Liu Jiqun and said that she had fallen in love with the teacher and had caused a bad impact on the school and forced her to transfer. However, this request was denied.
Later, the school put pressure on Shu Xincheng, but was also rejected.
On the morning of April 28, the "Exorcist Faction" called a meeting of students in the name of all the faculty and staff, and announced the arrest of Shu Xincheng on the charge of "seducing girls, teachers and students to fall in love".
Unable to control the situation, Principal Fu had to obey the consensus and led the staff and student representatives to the Military Bureau to ask for soldiers, while the chief of the zhao, Qin Mou, commanded some faculty members and students to go to the streets to find arrests, and declared that they would be beaten if they were caught.
With the help of his friends, Shu Xincheng was so frightened that he quickly disguised himself and avoided it. Although Shu Xincheng was not caught, his friend Li Jieren was arrested and imprisoned as a substitute ghost, and he was released after a week.
According to Shu Xincheng's later recollection, the scene was quite tense:
"After the change of clothes, that is, I heard the noise of the people outside the door, and the people came out with wine, and made a big fuss, so I was led by Yue An to the short wall of the backyard of the uncle of the jieren, and helped me jump over the wall to the neighbor."
The neighbor thought that he was a thief at first, and shouted loudly, and Yue An told him, and he went over the wall together, and he was all right.
After half an hour of debate, the jailer ordered the gendarmes and the student representatives of the Governor to enter the house and search for them. ”

After nearly two weeks of hiding, Shu Xincheng finally escaped from Chengdu in the early hours of May 11 with the help of friends.
On that day, Shu Xincheng changed his suit and leather shoes to robes and shoes, and shaved his head, wore sunglasses, and beard, so that he could get out of the city. After that, Shu Xincheng returned to Shanghai via Chongqing, and finally escaped from the right and wrong of this time.
Talking about a relationship almost killed, which is not uncommon in the Republic of China. Interestingly, this "love storm" not only did not break up Shu Xincheng and Liu Jiqun, but instead contributed to the good relationship between the two.
After that, the two corresponded frequently (later published as the Book of Ten Years), and thus became closer and closer. In 1931, Shu Xincheng and Liu Jiqun formed a new family and had two children.

Regarding "the love between teachers and students", Zhang Dongsun said quite reasonably in a letter, and finally copied the following:
"It is natural that a husband who is a teacher in the school shall not have a relationship with a female student. However, outside of school, if it is said that all the women who have been taught cannot be married, this is really nonsense. ”
Appendix: Shu Xincheng and Xu Beihong have both encountered "teacher-student love". Once, Xu drew a sketch of a character for Shu Xincheng's ex-wife He Jurui, and later wrote the word "brave" for Shu's new wife, Liu Jiqun.
Xu said: "You see how I handle it decently, ex-wife and post-wife, one painting and one word, no one can be guilty!" He also said: "A Shu Xincheng, a Xie Shoukang, and a Xu Beihong, now middle-aged love, I am afraid it has become a disease of the times!" ”
Shu Xincheng smiled: "We have come out of the disease of the times, only you Xu Beihong, still struggling in the disease!" ”
In the end, Xu Beihong's love affair with Sun Duoci ended in vain.
