Taliban supreme leader makes his first appearance: "Speak to his brave warriors and disciples"

Taliban officials announced on October 31 that the group's supreme leader, Hybatula Ahonzada, spoke to supporters in the southern city of Kandahar, AFP reported on October 31. It was his first public appearance since he took control of the Taliban in 2016.

Akhonzada has been the spiritual leader of the group since 2016, but he remained a reclusive figure even after the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in August.

His low profile has fueled speculation about his role in the Taliban's new government — and even rumors that he is "dead."

According to Taliban officials, Akhonzada inspected a local school in Kandahar on October 30 to "address his brave warriors and disciples." He prayed for the success of Taliban martyrs, wounded fighters and officials of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in this "great test."

Photos or videos have reportedly been leaked from the event site, but the Taliban's social media account published a 10-minute recording.

Akhnzada is widely believed to be the spiritual leader of the Taliban rather than a military commander, but his remarks will fuel speculation that he now plans to play a more important role in leading the new government.
