As night fell, a group of people sat in chairs, wearing black custom-made eye masks. In the midst of the freshness and a hint of tension, the music suddenly sounded.
If on the night of July 27, you suddenly come to the sunken square of Tang Dao 637, the most prosperous city in the center of Xining, you will think that some kind of mysterious performance art is being held here.
Of course, the blindfold has nothing to do with performance art, this is the Live Show scene jointly presented by MOO Music and FIRST Film Festival. This pioneering performance is a live performance by the audience to put on an eye mask and listen to the soundtrack of "Mosaic Girl" Zhang Zhan.
MOO Music and first film show Live Show live
After putting on the blindfold, you will return to the movie with the music, back to the karst landscape of Guizhou, which is full of fog. At some point, you feel as if you're going to sleep, like the dream of the heroine Xu Chen in the movie, where there's a white horse.
Putting on the blindfold and almost falling asleep is the best way to open the soundtrack of the movie in Zhang Zhan's vision. If Zhang Zhan's music is filled with a vague and hazy temperament like "Mosaic Girl", then Xiaohe's music is straightforward and warm.
Xiaohe has been playing Zhongruan for several years, and the Zhongruan in his hand has long blurred the boundaries of the type of instrument, plucking, pulling strings and even striking, this traditional Chinese instrument has a new vitality in Xiaohe's hands.
Then he began to improvise, and there was desolation in his voice, there was heroism, and more freedom. Singing to the rise, he led the audience to sing Tashi Delek, Tashi Delek, in this state of complete improvisation, he and everyone looked for the exit of music.
Xiaohe is a native of Handan, Hebei Province, and this is his first time in Xining, but his music has some inexplicable fit with this land of high clouds.
Avant-garde musician on the Live Show stage
Many years ago, Xiaohe drank too much, danced with everyone on the street of Beijing's South Sanlitun until dawn, and when others asked him what his name was, he said that his name was not He Guofeng, and his name was crazy. I don't know why, I always feel that the creek that night is particularly similar to this day.
Although they are all improvisational creations, the hualun band that appears in the end is very different from Xiaohe. Xiaohe is loud and willing to interact with the audience, while Hua Lun is very low-key, and in fact one of Hua Lun's members comes from MOO Music. They didn't speak the whole time, they played quietly, and even when the audience was shouting at Encore, they had hidden behind the scenes.
But Hua Lun's soundtrack to the film has an extraordinary significance for FIRST, because it belongs to "Elephant Sitting on the Ground".
I believe that not many of the people present have seen "The Elephant Sits on the Ground", and even fewer have listened to the full performance of the soundtrack. But that doesn't stop everyone from falling silent in that "di di" sound that runs through the music.
A lot of people are searching, maybe they're trying to find something that belongs to memory, some are thinking, they know the people and stories behind the music.
"The Elephant Sits on the Ground" Movie Soundtrack
Oh, and my favorite is "Bad Boy Sky," which is the theme song for "The Elephant Sits On the Floor," and I think it's written both for that movie and for each of us.
The performance lasted until midnight, and many people could not contain their excitement and shouted "Hualun Bull, Elephant Bull". As Hua Lun said, "In addition to countless garbage moments, there are also some desirable moments in life, and the second half of our lives has just begun." ”
This collaboration between MOO and FIRST creatively brings about such a moment of wilderness with music and film. It's great to have such a "bad boy's sky."
It was Xiao he had come to FIRST for the first time, but his work was not. "Birds in the Suburbs" was the best feature film for the 12th FIRST Film Festival, and the ending song of that film, "Birds on the Ground", was sung by Xiaohe.
Xiaohe's collaboration with Qiu Sheng, director of "Birds in the Suburbs", is interesting. Qiu Sheng first sent Xiaohe a set of documents containing 12 song titles, each song has one or two descriptions, and Xiaohe also returned a group of song titles to Qiu Sheng.
With a definite song title, everything goes smoothly. One of the words printed on the poster of "Birds in the Suburbs" reads, "In the tunnel, by the canal, adults are carrying birds." Coincidentally, when Xiaohe wrote "Birds on the Ground", he got up every morning to go to the park, the early birds called in the trees, and the early uncle walked on the ground, they were the "birds on the ground" in Xiaohe's heart.
Birds of the Suburbs
Music can take us away from reality for a short time, and film music is even more so because it has the dual attributes of music and picture.
In fact, this day is a complicated day for FIRST.
That very afternoon, FIRST's closing film was cancelled for some reason. But this night, because of these beautiful music, these moving improvisations, that faint sadness was washed away. It's just that there are some sadnesses that may never be able to make up for it anymore.
When the band Hua Lun took the stage, Gao Yiyi, the director of operations of FIRST, did not want to mention the name of "Elephant Sitting on the Ground", he only said one sentence: "People who have seen that movie will know where it came from." But after the performance, he was very emotional after drinking wine and blushing, he said that the performance was also to make up for last year's regrets, and finally FIRST CEO Li Ziwei simply shouted, "Friend, we miss you."
Hua Lun's soundtrack to "The Elephant Sits on the Ground" is a beautiful and sad story. Hu Bo and Hua Lun had only met once, and they talked all night, and soon Hua Lun sent an improvisation demo to Hu Bo, who was satisfied.
The Hua Lun band is on the live show
But soon Hu Bo was gone like that suddenly, and all the information left was the chat that night and the material he had cut many times. Hua Lun watched the film and began to bury his head in work, during which time they rarely spoke, silently recording, playing, and arranging.
Duan Lian, the curator of FIRST, once said that no matter which version of "Elephant Sitting on the Ground", it cannot be restored, they are just as close as possible to Hu Bo's original intention. But after writing "Bad Boy's Sky", Hua Lun felt that all this had been explained, and even exceeded expectations.
As for the so-called first band to be nominated for the Golden Horse Award for Best Soundtrack, they were just add-ons, and most importantly, they gained self-liberation.
Hua Lun's music has always pursued improvisation. I once watched a screening of "Elephants Sitting on the Ground" in Beijing, and that day Hualun invited villagers from Laomuden Village in Yunnan Province, who appeared in the soundtrack of the movie, and they sang a hymn on the spot. In the field where I have just finished watching the movie, the sad emotions are always irrepressible.
But in the wider space of Xining, the feeling that music brings is completely new, like a yellow handheld lamp swaying in the night sky, which seems to tell us that life is not only gray, but also a little hope.
Before last year's Golden Horse Awards, Ding Mao, a member of Hualun, sent a circle of friends, "Love is silently moving forward and sacrificing." The release of a record heralds the end of all the things that cannot be cleaned up. Because of these beautiful movie music, maybe the uncontrollable things around FIRST will also end here.
The fusion of music and image in time and space has also expanded more possibilities.
The FIRST Youth Film Festival has become more and more popular in the past few years. With that comes the industry's expectations of it are getting higher and higher, and it has more and more responsibilities on its own, such as giving more attention to vertical links such as film scores.
In addition to this Live Show, MOO and FIRST have done more exploration. At this year's FIRST, in order to encourage musicians who explore the world of images, MOO Music set up the "MOO Pioneer Music Breakthrough Award", which was won by the film "Spring Tide".
"Spring Tide" won the "MOO Pioneer Music Breakthrough Award"
"Spring Tide" also won the Audience Choice Honor Award of this year's film festival, that is, the film with the highest audience rating on the spot. The movie is like the title of the spring tide, the inner throbbing of the characters and the inner emotions of women are constantly spreading like a tide, until the end seems to overflow the tide of the screen.
Director Yang Lina gave his own answer for the heroine's escape, that is, the sound of romance. In "Spring Tide", it is Kihiro Hano's romantic and restrained soundtrack that makes all this happen.
The soundtrack of "Spring Tide" is composed by Japanese musician Yoshihiro Hano, who is also the royal soundtrackist of Hou Xiaoxian and Jia Zhangke. The soundtrack he made for Flowers of the Sea earned him the title of New Hope for Contemporary Film Scores in Cannes.
Yang Li Na once described the creative process of the film music of "Spring Tide" in this way: "He (Yoshihiro Hanno) has a dialogue over the air, video transmission, and repeatedly modifies your melody, and "Spring Dream" and "Spring Tide" all have his music left behind. ”
In addition to "Spring Tide", which won the "MOO Pioneer Music Breakthrough Award", the soundtrack of another competition shortlisted film, "Spring River Plumbing", is also outstanding.
《Spring River Plumbing》
As the biggest winner of this year's FIRST, I was there for the first screening of Spring River Plumbing at FIRST. When the name of music producer Dou Wei appeared, there was applause on the scene, which was almost the only time that the entire film festival was given a single round of applause to the staff of a certain link.
The image of "Spring River Plumbing" has the beauty of classical Chinese ink painting, and Dou Wei's music is both the inspiration of this form and the promoter of the final presentation.
In the stage of writing the script, director Gu Xiaogang often listened to Dou Wei's music and wrote stories according to his music. In the end, the presentation of this co-authored music film touched Dou Wei, who had not done film scoring for a long time, and made him decide to serve as the music supervisor of "Spring River Plumbing".
Although this year's FIRST movies may not be able to meet the audience for the time being, you can already be the first to hear these film music. As the official partner, the new generation of avant-garde music APP "MOO Music" and the FIRST Youth Film Festival have launched the [2014-2019 FIRST Youth Film Festival Excellent Soundtrack Awards] song list, and most of the music performed live on the Live Show is also included.

The competition for online music products has once become an arms race for copyright libraries in the past few years, which is a boring thing. What makes MOO music special is that you don't have to endure complex and disorderly entrances and fancy interfaces to get an excellent immersive music experience in a simple and prominent yellow and black theme design. And because of the powerful MOO#Tag exploration tag, you can more accurately find and focus on your favorite music genre.
After all, music is never just a "song". At the end of that performance, everyone present was still unsatisfied, everyone was shouting, and no one wanted the show to end simply.
In the end, Xiaohe and Hua Lun presented a joint improvisational performance, and the free music seemed to drown out the scene like a spring tide.
There is a line in Yang Dechang's classic movie "Yiyi" that after the invention of the film, human life has been extended at least three times. If the dimension of film music is added, perhaps this length will be further extended.
So, put on every blindfold that symbolizes the wilderness and keep listening.
