Tao Jin: Light wing umbrella, hard work and perseverance in life, optimistic and optimistic for the full life of the accumulation of strength, to the wing umbrella recovery difficulties to launch a challenge

author:Science Chinese Scichi

In movies, we often see such a scene: when major dangers such as fire and floods come, people will save themselves while praying to heaven when they are powerless to pray to god. But God is not everywhere, and rescue requires a physical presence. In China, many dangerous rescues are completed by Chinese soldiers, they are not gods, but they do fall from the sky, and what helps them achieve rapid rescue is the weapon - wing umbrella.

In 2008, an 8.0-magnitude earthquake occurred in Wenchuan, Sichuan, which was the most destructive and widespread earthquake since the founding of New China. At that time, the circuit was damaged, the road was damaged, the rainstorm was sudden, and the aftershocks were continuous, and the whole of Wenchuan fell into a desperate situation. When the local rescue forces are difficult to arrive, the paratroopers become the last hope, and in extreme cases, it is 15 children who carry parachutes to complete the "earth-shattering jump", opening a window for follow-up rescue.

It is understood that there are more and more types of wing umbrellas, and the functions are more and more complete, there is an armed wing umbrella, in the extreme conditions of rescue, skydivers can bring search and rescue dogs, rescue experts and so on from the sky together. Parachutes have been maximised by scientists.

Because of its good glidability and maneuverability, wing parachutes now have a wide range of application prospects in military, civilian and other fields. As scientists continue to explore, wing umbrellas will also play an important role in space carrier recovery in the future. Tao Jin, associate professor of the Department of Automation of Nankai University, and his research team are the main force in the study of wing umbrellas, and their lives have become thick and solid when studying light and powerful wing umbrellas.

There's a hot topic on Weibo that repeats every year: What would you do if you didn't think about income? In the comments section, various choices that have nothing to do with one's profession emerge here. Fortunately, there are also a few people who shine their ideals into reality and go farther and farther down the path of interest, and Tao Jin is one of them. However, his path is also full of twists and turns.

After the end of the college entrance examination in 2004, Tao Jin, who has been interested in robots since he was a child, did not hesitate to write automation in the college entrance examination volunteer professional filling column. During his undergraduate studies, he laid a solid foundation in automation, and after graduating, he continued his studies in control science and engineering. In the second year of his master's degree, Tao Jin's master's supervisor Kong Feng recommended him to Professor Xie Guangming of Peking University, and Tao Jin spent a fulfilling master's career in Peking University, an institution of higher learning. After graduating with a master's degree, he went to Beijing Sany Heavy Industry Research Institute to work, wanting to deeply combine his interests and careers, but his troubles also followed. 3 years of work, so that Tao Jin got rid of immaturity and grew into a qualified chief engineer. At the same time, he also constantly thought about the original intention of the professional choice at that time. For this young man, in life, in addition to learning to persevere, we must also learn to turn around and adjust the direction at the right time. After much deliberation, in 2014, he finally made an important decision to resign to pursue a doctorate.

After returning to Nankai University, Tao Jin chose to continue in the direction of automation control. He knew that the discipline of control was not a castle in the air and must be based on a certain experimental foundation. In order to get his scientific research life on track as soon as possible, he began to devote himself to scientific research with high intensity. In 2014, shortly after entering the school, he followed his supervisor Professor Sun Qinglin to engage in research related to wing parachute modeling and intelligent control. Scientific research work was not easy for Tao Jin, who was back on campus. But Tao Jin resisted the pressure, on the one hand, quickly digesting and absorbing new knowledge, on the other hand, flexibly applying knowledge to practice. During that time, Tao Jin gave up almost all his rest time and devoted all his energy to solving difficult problems, and under his night-time research, the problem of the difficulty of wing umbrella control was finally successfully solved. In 2016, he was awarded the National Doctoral Yani Scholarship and later the Zhou Enlai Scholarship from Nankai University, the highest honorary award a student at Nankai University. His doctoral dissertation was rated as an excellent doctoral dissertation of Nankai University, an outstanding doctoral dissertation in Tianjin, and he himself was also rated as an outstanding graduate of Nankai University.

After graduating with a ph.D., Tao Jin chose to go to Aalto University in Finland for postdoctoral research, he said: "To do things, you must look in a direction, and then go deep into it to get things done." At Aalto University in Finland, Tawkin continued his in-depth study of control science with his background and successfully developed a new method of acoustic micromanage. In view of the fact that the existing technology still has great limitations in terms of biocompatibility and versatility, Tao Jin proposed a new three-dimensional micro-manipulation method based on acoustic excitation, introducing systematic analysis and advanced control concepts, through the dynamic energy gradient control of the change of the region between nodes or nodes, to achieve simultaneous and independent manipulation of multiple micro-objects or micro-object groups in three-dimensional space, rather than being limited to manipulating micro-objects in the sound potential trap. At present, the research has achieved innovative results.

In 2018, Tawkin was named a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Academy of Finland and was granted a grant from the Finnish Academy of Sciences Postdoctoral Fellows Fund to continue his scientific research at Aalto University. Not only that, Tao Jin also received a postdoctoral grant from Peking University to follow Professor Xie Guangming to carry out control direction research.

In the 4 years of working abroad, Tao Jin is like a sponge, frantically absorbing knowledge and strengthening himself, which is also the tempering of the entire doctoral and postdoctoral period, he has exercised scientific research thinking, cultivated scientific research confidence, and improved scientific research literacy. This laid a solid foundation for his future scientific research work and accumulated profound strength.

After the postdoctoral work, Tao Jin did not hesitate to choose Nankai University among the olive branches extended by many universities. "First of all, I have a deep affection for Nankai University; secondly, the free scientific research atmosphere and strong academic background are also very attractive to me." After finishing his trip to Finland, Tawkin began a new journey at Nankai University.

optimistic and challenging the difficulty of parachute recovery

Since his doctoral period, Tao Jin has focused on research in the field of wing umbrellas. Over the years, with the support of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National Key Research and Development Program, he has carried out in-depth research on the dynamics of the parachute system, the planning and trajectory tracking control of the airdrop system, the airdrop test and other issues through the combination of theoretical analysis, numerical simulation and airdrop experiments, and has continuously won recognition in the industry. As a result, he successfully applied for a number of scientific research projects.

In the past three years, as an independent PI, Tao Jin has presided over 1 national natural science foundation youth project, 1 sub-project of the National Key Research and Development Program, 1 postdoctoral fund of the Finnish Academy of Sciences, 1 postdoctoral project in China, 3 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and 2 general projects of the Finnish Academy of Sciences. Rich scientific research projects have also brought mature scientific research results, research so far, Tao Jin has published more than 60 SCI/EI academic papers in well-known journals and conferences at home and abroad.

With the continuous emergence of scientific research results, Tao Jin's scientific research ideas are also deepening, from the control of the parachute to the track planning of the parachute, Tao Jin finally set the goal on the recovery of the parachute. He explained: "The traditional unmanned aerial vehicles are all round parachutes, but the biggest problem with round umbrellas is that they cannot control the direction of flight, and the wing umbrella can control the direction to achieve accurate and non-destructive recovery of unmanned aerial vehicles, realize its recycling, minimize the launch cost, and ensure the safety of the landing area, so scientists around the world are now studying the accurate recovery of wing umbrellas." ”

But parachute recycling research is not promising. In the 1990s, the United States spent a lot of manpower and material resources on the wing umbrella, but because the cost of the experiment was too high, they later stopped this military project, and in the years since, the related research heat has gradually decreased, and the control of the wing umbrella has gradually stagnated.

At the same time, China's research on wing umbrellas has not been shelved, but has been carried out in a hurry. Driven by interest and curiosity, Tao Jin and the team have been catching up for many years, in the case of scientific research conditions far inferior to foreign countries, constantly catching up, although the current wing umbrella recycling technology is not yet mature, but they have improved a grade at the original level. Tao Jin explained: "The current research direction of our research group is the automatic control of wing umbrellas, that is, the automatic recovery of wing umbrellas, including automatic route planning, fixed-point landing, and accurate landing, which is a fully automatic process. ”

In order to achieve this goal, Tao Jin and the team proposed the concept of open-ground collaborative recycling. He explained: "In the air, the parachutes landed; on the ground, four trolleys woven into a multi-point towing recycling net, receiving the parachutes. In this way, even if the parachute cannot find the landing point, the ground car can accurately move to the landing point, solve the problem of the large impact of the parachute landing, and realize the non-destructive recovery of the parachute. ”

Tao Jin said: "Although theory is not new, it is really difficult to achieve it experimentally, after all, there is indeed a huge gap from theory to realization." However, he turned sharply and said with a smile: "I am usually a relatively optimistic person, I can think well and definitely never think bad, I never make the worst plan, only the best plan." "Parachute non-destructive recovery experiments are difficult and costly, but as long as there is a gap in the experiment, Tao Jin will also find a way to penetrate the light." Now, optimism is the light of hope.

Parachute research is a challenging task, and as a researcher, Tolkien will take on the challenge of promoting the development of related technologies. On the other hand, as a member of the motherland, it is also a responsibility to give full play to one's own strength, not to fear hardships and dangers, to work tenaciously and tenaciously, and to contribute to the development of national security and national defense equipment. Tao Jin believes that although the road to parachute control is very long, and the competition between countries is not small, but the big waves and sand, with the efforts of the team, victory will appear.
