International Online Article: According to the New York Daily News reported on October 30, the first prize winner of the 2014 Nikon Micro Photography Contest was a self-taught microscopist in Panama, whose winning work was "The Heart-Shaped Lips of Rotifers".
Rogelio Moreno, who won the championship for the first time, began teaching himself microscopy in 2009, searching for samples by the river in his hometown and taking no less than hundreds of pictures with a microscope, and finally took pictures of rotifers opening their mouths. Rotifers are only 0.1 mm to 0.5 mm long and grow in fresh water. Moreno hopes to inspire more people to understand science and discover its beauty through the results of his efforts.
The Nikon Micro Photography Contest was founded in 1974 and this year marks its 40th anniversary photo exhibition. The competition works demonstrate the beauty of combining science and art, and the award criteria are unique creativity, informativeness, technical proficiency and visual impact. The first prize winner will receive a $3,000 worth of microscope equipment and a trip to New York. (Li Yue)
