The waters in the county are vast, and wild turtles are produced in rivers and lakes and ponds and reservoirs, especially Taibai Lake, Xinao Lake, South Lake and Weidi Lake. The unique regional environment provides a good ecological environment for the growth of turtles, making the quality of Hanshou turtles significantly better than other regions. In recent years, in accordance with the development idea of strong quality and plastic brand, the county's turtle industry has established the Turtle and Turtle Industry Association, formulated the "Hanshou Turtle Technical Standards", and started from the aspects of turtle germplasm purification, bait replacement, disease prevention and control, and process innovation, eliminated the past fast-growing breeding methods, and comprehensively promoted ecological and standardized breeding. Located in Wuzhu Mountain Village, Yanwanghu Town, Hanshou County, Hanshou County Pearl Breeding Professional Cooperative invested nearly 10 million yuan in 2018 to establish an ecological turtle characteristic industrial park and develop a "rice turtle symbiosis" breeding model, that is, stocking turtles in rice fields. Rice takes turtle manure as nutrients, without chemical fertilizers and pesticides; turtle food mainly feeds on pests, small fish, shrimp, screws, etc. in rice fields, and excrement can provide organic nutrients for rice, forming a good ecological cycle chain. The quality of turtles and high-quality rice has been greatly improved. Dai Pengfei, head of the cooperative, introduced that the output value per mu of rice turtle symbiosis model has increased by nearly 5,000 yuan on the basis of simple rice cultivation in the past, and the turtles in the field have been ordered by customers in the breeding process. This year, the cooperative ecological turtle characteristic industrial park has also added ecological breeding modes such as rice-fish-turtle and lotus-turtle, which has greatly improved the quality of turtles.
At present, Hanshou turtle "with its pure varieties, large batches, good quality, excellent service, brand sound, has formed a national market sales network." It has established a long-term and stable market supply relationship in large and medium-sized cities across the country and realized online sales. Some enterprise products are sold on modern logistics platforms such as Tmall and JD.com, with an annual sales volume of about 1,000 tons.
Up to now, Hanshou County has a total of 100,000 mu of turtle farming water surface. There are more than 2,000 turtle breeding households, 18 large-scale breeding enterprises, 1 turtle and turtle industry association, 29 turtle breeding professional cooperatives, and more than 45,000 employees.
