He is the grandson of Duke Wen of Jin and the son of Duke Cheng of Jin. In 599 BC, following the reign of his father Duke Cheng of Jin, the Duke of Jinjing was defeated by the State of Chu, making King Zhuang of Chu the overlord, but the Duke of Jin Jing also defeated the State of Qi. In his later years, Duke Jing of Jin moved the capital from Dai to Xintian (新田, in modern Houma, Shanxi) and renamed it Xindi. Later, he sent troops to eliminate the dictatorial Zhao family, and won the first victory of the office against the Qing clan.
