In August this year, Bayer Vayego® Forte was registered in Australia, bringing local growers an insecticide with a new mode of action, which contains 480 g/L tetraniliprole, which is a suspension agent.Chinese
Vayego Forte is able to specifically target the banana weevil borer (Cosmopolites sordidus) in the Cavendish banana and the 'Lady Finger' banana. If this pest is not controlled, it poses a serious threat. The biggest problem is that after the adults have crossed their tails, they lay eggs in the bulbs of banana semi-mature tissues, and the larvae drill the bulbs of moths, crisscrossing the moths, which seriously affects the growth of the plant, is susceptible to wind, and even rots and dies of the whole plant.
The introduction of the chemical tetrazoleamide in Vayego Forte was significant for the control of banana weevils. The new product can be used as an alternative to the pest control currently registered for the control of this pest insecticide, such as imidacloprid. Tetrazoleamide, a novel mode of action, will also have a positive impact on resistance management.
The product also has other significant advantages, such as not causing mite outbreaks, low dosage and reduced occurrence of stem clefts. Due to the low dosage used, only a smaller volume is applied to the plant, thus reducing the risk of stem splitting.
Bayer will conduct demonstration trials of Vayego Forte products at several commercial banana farms in North Queensland's major banana-growing region during the current growing season. Commercial application devices and large-scale plots will be used, and this work will compare Vayego Forte to some of the other products currently on the market.
