In October 1982, founding Lieutenant General Nie Fengzhi stepped down as commander of the Nanjing Military Region. Nie Fengzhi and Xiang Shouzhi are both veteran Red Army soldiers, who participated in the Long March, experienced eight years of bloody War of Resistance, four years of liberation war, and became a generation of famous generals who have experienced hundreds of battles.
During the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, Xiang Shouzhi participated in the Fifth Campaign and Defensive Operation, and Nie Fengzhi served as the commander of the Sino-DPRK Joint Air Force, fighting against the powerful US Air Force in the blue sky.

After returning home, the trajectory of the two is different. Xiang Shouzhi successively served as deputy commander of the 15th Army, chief of staff, and commander of the army, and was later ordered to form the Second Artillery.
Nie Fengzhi successively took charge of the air force of the Nanjing Military Region and the air force of the Fuzhou Military Region, which can be described as one north and one south. By 1977, the two founding generals had come together.

In April 1977, the founding lieutenant general stepped down as deputy commander of the Nanjing Military Region and commander of the Air Force, and became the commander of the Nanjing Military Region, ranking among the senior generals of the Grand Military Region.
In September of the same year, founding Major General Xiang Shouzhi was appointed deputy commander of the Nanjing Military Region, and later served as a member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee of the Nanjing Military Region (note: from November 1977). As a result, Xiang Shouzhi became Nie Fengzhi's subordinate.

During Nie Fengzhi's administration of the Nanjing Military Region, his health was not as good as before. If you think about it, it's understandable. Nie Fengzhi had been fighting all his life, and his body had been greatly destroyed.
Before Nie Fengzhi went to work in the morning, he had to get an injection first, inject glucose saline at noon, and then take another injection in the afternoon to maintain normal work.

At night, Nie Fengzhi still had to continue to infuse glucose saline. The high-intensity work seriously overdrawn Nie Fengzhi's body, so that he fainted in the office many times.
The commander of the Grand Military Region is an extremely important post, and his work is even more complicated. Knowing that he was not in good health, Nie Fengzhi asked the Central Military Commission three times to resign as commander of the Nanjing Military Region.

In October 1982, Nie Fengzhi, who was then a member of the Central Advisory Committee, officially stepped down as commander of the Nanjing Military Region and was succeeded by Xiang Shouzhi. The establishment of the Central Advisory Committee system was originally to ensure the normal replacement of the old and the new.
Xiang Shouzhi was 65 years old at the time, and whether it was seniority or actual combat experience, he was competent enough to serve as the commander of the Nanjing Military Region and ensure that the Nanjing Military Region gradually realized the replacement of the old and the new.

As a matter of fact, Xiang Shouzhi was in charge of the Nanjing Military Region for nearly eight years and excavated many young senior officers. To take the simplest example, Xiang Shouzhi dispatched the First Army to southern Xinjiang to participate in the Battle of Laoshan.
In June 1985, after the first army was re-established, fu quanyou (then 54 years old) was promoted to commander of the Chengdu Military Region by leaps and bounds, while political commissar Shi Yuxiao (then 52 years old) became deputy political commissar of the Nanjing Military Region.
