In February 1933 and April 1934, due to the warlords Tian Songyao and Liu Xiang successively launching a "three-way siege" and a "six-way siege" against the Chuanxia Su district, the Red Army withdrew twice from Changchi and Nanjiang in order to tighten its positions. During this period, the political power was replaced by the military by Zhou Wencheng, the commander of the Sichuan Army, Li Hongtao, and the regimental commander Xue Lianshen.
