A writer, after a considerable period of writing, pays homage to a writer who has had an important influence on him in the form of painting. Such a thing has always been my yearning, but unfortunately, because of my limited ability, I dare not try to do it.
So, seeing Thrush's new book, the hand-painted literary goddess series, I truly envy and admire.
Xiao Hong, Zhang Ailing, Lin Huiyin, and Sanmao are all symbols of the times, and in the process of our growth, they are all literary figures with enlightenment and exemplary significance. For their life stories, many readers are already familiar with them. Presenting their lives within this rather restrictive narrative framework is not an easy task.

Fortunately, Thrush has a skilled writing skill and a flexible brush, so the text and the picture appear together, which gives these stories another form and style. Most crucially, these figures grew up with Thrush's own soul and are still full of affection to this day, so this emotional penetration is divided into two springs, which are injected into her words and paintings. It can be said that these four books, because of the concentration of emotions, have also become Thrush's own personal reading literature.
These four women have experienced many big scenes in their lives, the three of the Republic of China, Shaohua time in the turbulent displacement of war, Sanmao also experienced the Sahara Rebellion. Thrush presents some big scenes, using the technique of empty lenses to push the solemn thing of the era into the distance. More often, she adopts the method of close gaze, and the personal objects of the master are solidified by the gaze and become the crystallization of memory. This is a very significant feature of the series of biographical picture books of Thrush, which is in line with the way women view the world, and also allows readers, especially female readers, to have a subtle and strong connection and resonance with the life of female biographers through the connection of female authors.
I don't know if it is because of age, in my, the attractiveness of space gradually declines, and the charm of time is more intense and mellow. In my reading of these books, I was often struck by the hand-drawn drawings of these objects. I like the presentation of materialized objects, and their static contains the mystery of time.
Thrush herself is a delicate woman who is very particular about dressing, so she will present a lot of details about clothes in the story of the four women. Personally, there are two things that impress me deeply.
One is in Zhang Ailing's story, the stepmother and Xiao Zhang Ailing's set of short jackets and long skirts with different sizes of snow blue velvet materials. The dialogue of this picture is that the stepmother says, your mother is only willing to make clothes for you with rags, where is she willing to use the whole velvet? Do you like me or do you like your mother? Xiao Zhang Ailing said, I like you.
I remember this story deeply, and in retrospect, it seems that I set out to find a way to understand Zhang Ailing, the loneliness and shadows that were deposited in my heart when I was a child, and the various insincere words that faced the world and faced myself.
There is also a scene in the Sanmao story where the mother Miao Jinlan chases the car of the classmates with her two daughters. When she first arrived in Taiwan, a young mother who was struggling with all kinds of hardships and difficulties finally had a chance to socialize, and an invitation from a classmate association made her extremely excited. Miao Jinlan prepared with all his might, his own dark purple cheongsam, white high heels, the white dress that he sewed for his daughters many nights under the lamp, a ring of purple ruffles sewn at the hem, and braised pork and borscht stewed the night before the party. In the heavy rain early in the morning, the mother and daughter three people wore elaborate dresses, holding a pot of braised meat and a pot of borscht, but the tricycle carrying the mother and daughter trio was still late, watching the old classmate's car drive around the corner, Miao Jinlan shouted wildly...
This story has a special meaning in my reading history, it is sandwiched in the brilliant distant stories of Sanmao, like a thin rope that pulled me from mid-air to the ground, the desolation and regret in the daily life of the world, those helplessness and regret, those real weights and wonderful beauty, pressed on me. It can be said that this story seems to have made me leave the sanmao-style illusion from now on.
So many years later, reading this story again, I saw the picture under the thrush pen presented: sparse lines, representing heavy rain, three clothes, purple cheongsam in the middle, two white dresses with purple ruffles at the hem next to them, and three pairs of shoes, white high heels in the middle, and two pairs of white children's shoes on both sides, all standing empty, no one's body inside, in the upper right corner of the picture, is a cluster of purple flowers, and the petals are falling with the wind and rain.... In Zhang Ailing's story, the thrush did not paint people, only two soft and warm looking velvet short jackets and long skirts, and the first chill of life came out of the paper.
Four exquisite books were in front of me, four familiar and treasured female writers, all close to me when I was young. I have personally been away from them for a long time, especially Sanmao, who died at the end of my adolescence, and since then she has become a long-time friend in my heart. So, the first book I picked up was Sanmao. Those stories, those tones, and the young surging heart that read Sanmao's works at that time were faintly visible with the process of reading.
This feeling of faintly revisiting old feelings is repeated in the reading of this set of picture book biographies. Looking back like this, even the shadow is very precious, not to mention the thrush to show it vividly. It would be a shame to miss this set of books – as Thrush put it, everyone has been able to use it "... Take a look at life and death, goodbye to yourself, heaven and earth, and all beings. ”
