Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease that seriously endangers human health caused by schistosomiasis infestation. People and animals, such as cows, horses, pigs, sheep and dogs, can get the disease. Schistosomiasis can cause fatigue, chronic diarrhea and malnutrition, and in severe cases, hepatosplenomegaly, ascites, and even death.
How people get schistosomiasis
Infected by contact with water contaminated with feces from schistosomiasis eggs, or by contact with infested water containing snails, which are the only intermediate hosts for schistosomiasis.
What are the manifestations of infection with schistosomiasis
In mild cases of schistosomiasis, fatigue, chronic diarrhea, and malnutrition are presented with marked wasting, extreme malnutrition, hepatosplenomegaly, and ascites in severe cases. Some advanced patients die from upper gastrointestinal bleeding and hepatic coma. In areas where schistosomiasis is endemic, most people have no obvious symptoms after infection with schistosomiasis, and later develop chronic schistosomiasis.
Active prevention and treatment of schistosomiasis
1. Not touching the infected water is the best way to prevent schistosomiasis. Before coming into contact with diseased water, apply protective medicine and wear protective equipment to areas that may be exposed to diseased water. If you are exposed to infected water, you should take the initiative to go to the blood prevention department for examination, and if you find that the infection should be treated early.
2. Manage the human feces of animals, avoid feces entering the water, and prevent the spread of schistosomiasis.
3. Snails are the only intermediate hosts of schistosomiasis, and eliminating snails can effectively block the spread of schistosomiasis.
4. When suspected of getting sick, it is necessary to seek medical treatment as soon as possible, and the safe and effective drug for the treatment of schistosomiasis is praziquantel. As long as you go to the blood prevention department for timely examination and treatment, schistosomiasis can be cured.
