Recently, some animal protection self-media broke the news that Liuzhou City, Guangxi Province, will hold a folk "thrush" competition on November 21, through the bird fight to evaluate the ranking, won up to 3,000 yuan in prize money. If you want to participate in this competition, you have to pay an entry fee of starting from 100 yuan. It is understood that the thrush is a national second-level protected animal, and it is illegal to carry out such activities. On October 29, the local forestry department told Jimu News that the event had been cancelled and that such activities would be strictly monitored in the future.

On October 27, the WeChat public account "Anti-Poaching Serious Crime Team" broke the news that Liunan District of Liuzhou City, Guangxi Province, will hold a folk "Bird King Competition" on November 21, participating in the national second-level protected animal "Thrush". The above-mentioned public claims that the competition is not compared to the appearance and stature of the birds, but to "who is the most fierce and can fight the most", that is, fighting birds.

The Jimu News reporter saw from a "Bird Fighting Notice" stamped with the seal of the "Liuzhou Chestnut Garden Bird Association" circulated on the Internet that the activity party will hold the third thrush fighting competition on November 21, and the competition address is located near a farmers' market in Liunan District, Liuzhou City. The notice mentions that the prize money for the first to fifth place winners of the competition ranges from 600-3000 yuan, while the entry fee is from 100 yuan. The rules of the bird fight are to use the cage fight timing method, and the staff will fight the cage during the fight. The above notice will be issued on October 20, 2021, with the phone number of the event contact.

The Jimu News reporter inquired and learned that in February this year, the newly adjusted "List of Wild Animals under National Key Protection" showed that "Thrush" belonged to the national second-level protected animals. On the national social organization credit information publicity platform, the reporter did not inquire about the organization "Liuzhou Chestnut Garden Bird Association".

"Thrush" belongs to the national second-level protected animal

On the afternoon of October 29, Jimu News reporter contacted Mr. Ma, the organizer of the above-mentioned bird fighting activity, as a contestant, and said that the event had been cancelled due to the relevant documents issued by the government. When asked by reporters whether it will be held later, he said that there are no plans at present.

Subsequently, the Jimu News reporter learned from the Liuzhou Forestry and Garden Bureau that they had received relevant feedback before and had ordered the organizer to cancel the bird fighting activity. The staff of the Bureau's Park Management and Wildlife Conservation Section also said that they have informed the organizers of the event that the thrush is a national second-level protected animal, and such activities are not allowed in the future, and they will also investigate whether there are similar violations of the law in the future.

The Jimu News reporter's inquiry found that in addition to illegally using thrushes to hold bird fighting competitions, there were also people who used them for gambling. According to the WeChat public account "Nanning Police", on March 28 this year, the Xingning Public Security Branch of the Nanning Municipal Public Security Bureau organized police forces to seize in a wild casino that used thrushes to gamble with birds in an ecological park in Santang Town, Xingning District, arrested 55 organizers and gamblers on the spot, and brought back 40 thrushes (live) of the national second-level protected animal.

After investigation, the organizer proposed to the owner of the ecological park to rent its venue to carry out bird fighting gambling in order to make profits, and on the day of arrest, the organizer collected a total of more than 6,600 yuan in tickets, and bet a total of 120,000 yuan on 3 bird fights, of which the participants made a maximum profit of 16,000 yuan per single game.
