At 2:55 on September 10, the doctors of Nanjing First Hospital came to the ward of Nanjing General Hospital and bowed to Zhang Yuhua before removing the cornea for the elderly chief.
Comrade Zhang Yuhua was born on November 15, 1916 to a peasant family in Zhangpi Village, Wendenying Township, Wenden City, Shandong Province.
He began schooling in the fall of 1923, graduated from the Rongcheng Rural Normal School in 1932, and worked as a teacher in the primary school in the spring of 1933.
He joined the Communist Party of China in April 1935 and joined the army in December 1937. He once served as regimental political commissar, director of the divisional political department, division political commissar, deputy director of the military political department, deputy commander of the army artillery, artillery commander, chief of staff, deputy commander, deputy political commissar and political commissar of the artillery of the military region, deputy political commissar of the Wuhan Military Region, secretary of the Hubei Provincial CPC Committee, deputy political commissar of the Nanjing Military Region, and adviser of the Nanjing Military Region.
Comrade Zhang Yuhua is a deputy to the 11th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and a member of the 11th Central Committee. At the age of 23, Zhang Yuhua was one of the leaders of the Tianfushan Uprising, participated in the first battle of jiaodong anti-Japanese resistance, the Battle of Lei Temple, and shot down a Japanese plane.
The old general said, "The Battle of the Temple of Thunder was the first battle I fought."
On March 16, 1940, Zhang Yuhua took part in the Battle of Sun Zu commanded by Xu Xiangqian, commander of the First Column of the Eighth Route Army. His three battalions undertook the task of blocking the attack at Jiuzi peak, repelled the enemy's charge 9 times, and achieved the record of killing and wounding more than 300 Japanese puppet troops, and dealing a heavy blow to the arrogance of the enemy. But in this battle, a bullet penetrated his abdomen from his right armpit and remains in his body to this day.
Since 1950, Zhang Yuhua has served as the political commissar of the 118th Division of the 40th Army of the Chinese Volunteer Army and the deputy director of the Military Political Department, leading the troops to participate in the first to fifth campaigns of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea.
