On October 29, Caoyang New Village, the first workers' village in New China, celebrated its 70th birthday.
After the founding of New China, in order to solve the problem of urban workers' housing, Shanghai began to build workers' houses. In 1951, the construction of the first new workers' village, Caoyang Yi Village, began in Putuo District, Shanghai, and in the following years, more than 1,000 model workers, advanced workers, and March 8 red flag bearers moved into the new village and started a happy new life. The overall architectural style of "white walls and red roofs" here was once a "business card" for Shanghai's working class housing.

Over the past 70 years, Caoyang New Village has become a name that carries countless memories and glory. However, with the passage of time, the representative buildings of that year have aged and are not so comfortable to live in: kitchens, bathrooms, 3 shared houses; brick and wood houses, walking upstairs, "bang bang" downstairs...
The cramped and obsolete old houses made resident Zhu Huimin "take a breath of cool air". In 1998, he applied for a staff housing in Caoyang Village, and when he looked at the field, he was a little disappointed, "The area is very small, and the toilets are shared." Zhu Huimin applied for a house on the 3rd floor, which was built on the basis of the original two floors in the early 1960s. In this layer of the cover, the wall material is made of fly ash bricks, the hardness is not enough, and the TV set is not easy to hang.
In 2020 and 2021, the Work Report of the Shanghai Municipal Government will list improving the living conditions of citizens and promoting urban renewal as important contents. Riding on the east wind of the policy, the renovation of old houses in Caoyang New Village has been steadily advancing. In Caoyang Village, which is mainly involved in the renovation project, the signing of the complete set of renovation of the old house was launched in December 2019, and all the residents have signed a contract to move out in early April this year, and the renovation construction has been basically completed, and the residents are moving back one after another.
After the transformation, Caoyang Village still retains the architectural style of "white walls and red roof", realizes the exclusive use of kitchens and bathrooms for each household, and also installs smart applications such as multi-functional street lamps, becoming a "small bungalow" in the downtown area.

At the theme activity of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the village, the representatives of the relocated residents of Caoyang Village held the keys and flowers of the new houses in the streets from the responsible persons of the relevant departments of Shanghai Municipality and Putuo District, symbolizing the beginning of a new life.
Caoyang Xincun Street said that it will continue to take root in the fertile soil of the people, adhere to the people-centered, deeply practice the important concept of the people's city, strengthen planning and guidance, do excellent urban design, actively promote the organic renewal of the city, and build a national "15-minute community life circle" pilot, so that the neighborhood has more appearance, more charm and more temperature.
