According to Deutsche Zeitung, berlin-brandenburg airport company is a joint venture between the city of Berlin, the state of Brandenburg and the federal government. Companies say they will lose about 1 billion euros in 2020, and the existing liquidity will only be enough to maintain until the first quarter of next year, and it is expected to bear high losses in the next few years, requiring an additional injection of 2.4 billion euros by the three holders by 2026.

Construction of the airport began in 2006 and officially opened on October 31 last year, nine years later than originally scheduled, and the budget was severely overrun.

Germany's Federal Ministry of Transport has asked the airport to submit a written report on its first year of operation, which is expected to be completed by November 5. The Ministry of Transport said on Oct. 30 that the report should explain the current status of airport operations and areas for improvement.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, security checks have become more cumbersome, coupled with staff shortages, and the operation of Berlin-Brandenburg Airport has been chaotic, which has attracted public criticism. According to Le Monde, the new airport has also been exposed to a variety of problems such as broken floor tiles, poor toilet hygiene, untimely cleaning of garbage cans, and frequent elevator failures.
