Bright Culture Weekend: Stroll through the rainforest

Guangming Daily reporter Chen Yi

Walking through the rainforest, the body and mind will soon calm down. The oncoming damp heat, the cold of the clouds, the haze of the Tyndall phenomenon, and the comfort of breathing air rich in negative oxygen ions can free people's thoughts from reality and social relations.

As an ecosystem commonly found in the tropics from 10 degrees north to 10 degrees south, the biomes of tropical rainforests have a very rapid succession rate due to extremely small seasonal variations. Compared with Southeast Asia, Australia, the Amazon River Basin in South America, the Congo River Basin in Africa and other regions, China's tropical rainforest resources are relatively scarce, mainly distributed in Hainan Island, as well as southern Yunnan, southern Taiwan, southern Guangxi and Tibet's Metuo County.

The Hainan tropical rainforest is the most concentrated, the most abundant species type, the best preserved and the largest contiguous continental island tropical rainforest in China. Recently, Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park was officially established, which has built a strong protective barrier for the creatures in the rainforest.

Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park is located in the middle of Hainan Island, spanning 9 cities and counties of Wuzhishan, Qiongzhong, Baisha, Changjiang, Dongfang, Baoting, Lingshui, Ledong and Wanning, with a total area of 4269 square kilometers, accounting for 1/7 of the land area of Hainan Island. In the past, the protection of tropical rainforests in Hainan was scattered by administrative divisions, and the forestry departments of various cities and counties managed them separately. The establishment of the national park has upgraded the protection of tropical rainforests from the city and county level to the national level, and a more efficient protection mechanism, a more reasonable staffing, and a more professional scientific research force have brought unprecedented attention to the maintenance of tropical rainforest biodiversity and the rescue protection of rare and endangered species.

Wander through the rainforest, see the vines winding, and listen to the babbling of the stream. The sunlight that peeks through the gaps in the dense foliage gives off a distinctive color in the rainforest. Here, the round-nosed monitor lizard is foraging, the otter is drinking, the Hainan gibbon is singing in the canopy, the pink chain snake is cooling itself in the water, and the parrot ridge tree frog is lying on the leaves as spring as its skin... Here, cute animals are free and scary animals become cute because this is their home. They live together in this land, and they are indispensable. Protecting them is the only right choice for human beings.

In order to fight for enough sunlight, the trees in the rainforest desperately grow upwards, and in order to make themselves not easily break and absorb more nutrients in the wind and rain, they have formed huge roots. The roots act as good support and shorten the transport route for nutrients. Dozens of air roots thrown by the banyan tree are rooted into the soil, greedily absorbing water and nutrients, growing rapidly, and the original fine and soft air roots have grown into thick trunks, forming a magnificent landscape of "single trees and forests".

Vines, on the other hand, have another wisdom, climbing into the canopy of towering ancient trees or attaching themselves to the branches of trees, adding a different charm to the rainforest with a kind of "can't beat and join" wisdom. In the tropical rainforest, the tree in front of you is never just a tree, symbiosis, epiphysis, parasitism, decay and other phenomena can be seen everywhere, they cooperate with each other and compete with each other, cruel plunder and mutual achievement.

Tropical rainforests have bred a variety of organisms, provided water and oxygen for human life, and play an important role in regulating the climate, purifying the air, and preventing soil erosion. When we walk through it, we can't help but lament the greatness of nature and the smallness of human beings, and let people cherish the gifts we have received.
