Ahmad al-Assadi, a spokesman for hashed al-Shaabi, a militia group that hashed al-Shaabi and mostly Shiites, in cooperation with Iraqi government forces to encircle the remnants of IS, said Abutasin was killed as the procession advanced toward the town of Hashed al-Haga.

Friends said at Abtasin's funeral that most of his friends called him "Sniper Sheikh" or "Hawkeye."

In one film, Abtasin outlines his experience as a sniper who has been involved in military combat since 1973. Abtasin also participated in the Iran-Iraq War of 1980-1988, as well as in the Iraq War in 2003, before focusing on the extremist group IS.
