He was drafted by the NBA Milwaukee Bucks with the ninth overall pick in the first round in 1998 and was soon exchanged for the Dallas Mavericks. In 2007, Nowitzki led the Mavericks to a team-record of 67 wins and 15 losses, and won the regular season MVP. In 2011, nowitzki led the Mavericks beat the Heat 4-2 to win their first championship and a Finals Most Valuable Player. In January 2016, Nowitzki announced his retirement from the German men's basketball team, ending a 19-year national team career. On March 8, 2017, Nowitzki became the sixth player in NBA history to make it to the 30,000-point mark. On June 27, the 2016-17 NBA Teammate of the Year award was announced, and the Mavericks' Dirk Nowitzki won the award. On December 17, 2017, the 39-year-old Nuotianwang reached 1,424 career appearances in the NBA, tied for sixth place in history.

On July 23, 2017, Nowitzki signed the Dallas Mavericks to a one-year, $5 million contract, setting NBA records for the same team for 21 consecutive seasons.

On April 10, 2019, Dirk Nowitzki announced his retirement after the penultimate game against the Suns in the regular season, saying it was his last home game for Dallas. Christaps Porzingis started his career in the Spanish Basketball League, entered the NBA through the draft in 2015, played for the Knicks and the Lone Rangers, was named to the First Team of the All-Rookie Team in the 2015–16 season, won the All-Star Skills Challenge in 2017, and was named to the All-Star Bench in 2018.
