Mr. Yuan Kuocheng, a well-known storytelling and performance artist, died in Beijing in the early morning of March 2, 2015, at the age of 86.
It is said that there are four styles of storytelling performance: handsome selling strange and bad, Liu Lanfang, Yuan Kuocheng, Shan Tianfang and Tian Lianyuansi each occupy a word. I understand that this "sell" word mainly refers to the knowledge of big, dropped the book bag, informative, fascinating. Yuan Kuocheng's most famous work is "Romance of the Three Kingdoms", which epitomizes this "selling" word. The novel is written in a shallow and close language, saying that the shallow is according to the level at that time, and it is basically a book of heaven for today's public. Mr. Yuan's passage of text, a paragraph of vernacular, detailed explanation, and then repeatedly inserted comments and jokes in the middle, making people listen not tired, always knowing.
Of course, selling is a great job. In fact, he is also handsome, a high-pitched voice is highly recognizable, the words are clear, although the encounter is always on the radio, but the theater effect is not bad. He was also bad, laughing at Lü Bu's wolf nature, Cao Cao's cunning, and Liu Bei's child-throwing, full of ridicule, quite damaged often.
Mr. Yuan's "Three Kingdoms" is not a script, but a modern perspective, presented with profound life experience and historical insight. For example, Zhuge Liang is more intelligent and close to the demon in the original work, to Mr. Yuan's mouth, "this Mr. Kong Ming" has a lot of small calculations and pranks, especially with Lu Su, suddenly the divinity is reduced, and the human taste is greatly increased. Another example is the Second Prince Guan Yunchang, Yuan Kuocheng poured deep feelings into him, which was depicted according to the specifications of Wu Song in "Water Margin", a god-like figure, but he also did not forget to ridicule Guan Yu's rigidity and arrogance, so it was particularly three-dimensional and fresh. Like cross-talk, the original performance was a stall performance, later became a teahouse entertainment, and finally theater art, TV darling, Yuan Kuocheng has a sense of cultural thoroughness that Liu, Shan, Tian and other commentators do not have, you will feel that he is the only person who can enter the university and go to the pulpit.
I do not deliberately elevate Mr. Yuan when I say this, but his works have the color of traditional storytelling, create a realistic meaning in fictional art, and he also expands the boundaries of expression of storytelling. Most of the commentaries are the rendition stories of the emperors and generals, the narrative has routines, the characters have faces, with obvious grassroots meaning, with unlimited possibilities for replication. Among them, the best artists will integrate the city culture, like Chen Yinrong's "Xingtang Biography", which is really full of paper folk wisdom. And Yuan Kuocheng's "Shui Po Liang Shan" takes the commentary a big step in the direction of martial arts novels.

Mr. Yuan Kuocheng was born in Tianjin in 1929. He came from a family of storytellers, and his uncles Yuan Jieting and Yuan Jieying and his father Yuan Jiewu were known as the "Three Masters of the Yuan Family". Together with Liu Lanfang, Shan Tianfang and Tian Lianyuan, he was collectively known as the "Four Greats". Mr. Yuan drove the crane to the west, and several others also entered the twilight years, and the art of storytelling was gradually reduced due to the diversion of new entertainment methods, becoming a tool for some ancient people to remember the past, and no longer had the magic power to turn all sentient beings upside down. But it doesn't matter, once a dazzling star, it will always twinkle in the sky of history.
