Wulongtan is located in the west of Nanjing City, formerly known as Qingshui Datang. Because there are many willows in the embankment and many lotus flowers in the pool, it is called hibiscus pond. Because the lotus flowers in the pond are white, there is also the name of the white lotus pond. According to legend, there is an oolong in the Jin Dynasty Lake, from which the Oolong Lake got its name.

During the Qianyuan dynasty of the Tang Dynasty, the great scholar Yan Zhenqing was stationed in Nanjing, and once wrote to Tang Suzong to set up 81 release ponds throughout the country, and Wulongtan was one of them, Jiangning Release Pond.

Wulongtan is surrounded by Qingliang Mountain (Stone Mountain), Helmet Mountain (Bowl Mountain), Xiaocang Mountain, Snake Mountain, and the lake is surrounded by shadows, which are known as the "Crown of the West City" and "Little West Lake". Since the Ming and Qing dynasties, the Daguan literati liked its quiet environment, and built garden villas here, such as the Ming Dynasty Jin Taishou Garden, Wu Yingji Wu's Garden, Zhang Xuan's Zhang's Garden, He Dong's How Tai Servant Garden, Tang Changshi Landscape Garden, Mao Yuanyi's Garden, as well as the Qing Dynasty Tao Shu Bo Mountain Garden, Wei Yuan's Small Scroll, Xue Shiyu Xue Lu, and so on.

In the 1980s, Wulongtan was set up as Wulongtan Park, and the main attractions are Miaoxiang Pavilion, Lenghua Hall, Furuozhai Pavilion, Feiyue Pavilion, Wanzai Pavilion, Wuhou Ancestral Hall, Suolong Bridge, Fangsheng Nunnery, etc., as well as Cao Xueqin Memorial Hall and Yan Zhenqing Memorial Hall.
