In December 2016, China passed the "Giant Panda National Park System Pilot Program", which kicked off a state-led and highest level of protection for giant pandas and their habitats. By the end of the pilot in 2021, the Giant Panda National Park has been officially established, and the breeding and protection of giant pandas has achieved high-quality development, and as of October 1, the total number of giant pandas in captivity in the world has reached 673, and the number of wild giant pandas has reached 1864.

Zhang Zhizhong, director of the Department of Wildlife Conservation of the State Forestry and Grassland Administration: Sichuan has played a leading role in the field investigation, disease research, and scientific protection of giant pandas.

In recent years, our province has actively implemented ecological restoration projects such as returning farmland to forests and building giant panda ecological corridors, establishing nature reserves, and carrying out the declaration of "giant panda world heritage sites", etc. The data show that with the continuous improvement of the ecological environment and the continuous strengthening of protection in the distribution area of giant pandas, the number of giant panda populations and habitat areas in Sichuan have continued to grow. Sichuan, as the largest area of the Giant Panda National Park, accounts for more than 87% of the total area of the national park, according to the latest statistics, Sichuan has 1387 wild giant pandas and 548 captive giant pandas, occupying an important position in the strategic development of the national park.
