Rome, 30 Oct (Xinhua) -- The leaders of the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, and France met on the sidelines of the G20 summit held in Rome, Italy, on 30 October. In a joint statement issued after the meeting, the leaders of the four countries said that US President Joe Biden "clearly promised" that the US side would return conditionally to the JCPOA on the Iranian nuclear issue.

The statement said Biden "clearly committed" that as long as Iran resumes compliance, the United States is willing to return to and fully comply with the Iranian nuclear agreement. The leaders welcomed this and believed that the parties concerned with the Iranian nuclear issue could quickly reach a consensus on the resumption and full compliance with the Iranian nuclear agreement, so as to ensure that Iran's nuclear program is fully used for peaceful purposes.

The statement said that after the resumption of implementation of the Iranian nuclear agreement, the relevant sanctions against Iran will be lifted, which "will be conducive to Iran's economic growth", but "only if Iran makes changes, all this is possible." The four leaders called on Iran to "seize the opportunity and show sincerity," saying it was the only viable way to avoid an escalation of the crisis.

On the 27th of this month, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Bagheri said after holding consultations with EU representatives in Brussels, Belgium, that Iran agreed to restart Iranian nuclear negotiations before the end of November. On the 28th, when Bagheri was invited to visit Russia, he said that the only goal of the new round of negotiations is to "lift the cruel and illegal sanctions imposed by the United States on Iran."

In July 2015, Iran reached a nuclear deal with the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, China and Germany. In May 2018, the US government unilaterally withdrew from the Iranian nuclear agreement, and then restarted and added a series of sanctions against Iran. Since May 2019, Iran has gradually suspended the implementation of some of the terms of the JCPOA, but promised that the measures taken were "reversible". Since April this year, the parties to the Iranian nuclear agreement have held six rounds of talks in Vienna, the capital of Austria, to discuss the resumption of implementation by the United States and Iran. Due to the serious differences between the United States and Iran and the change of leadership of the Iranian government, the new round of talks has not been held.
