
According to the South China Morning Post, 30-year-old Internet celebrity Guo Meiling, also known as Guo Meimei, was convicted of selling diet foods containing the appetite suppressant sibutramine. According to the Global Times, Guo Meimei was one of 32 people who were found to be selling or producing sibutramine products.
The Shanghai Railway Transport Court held a public hearing in the case of defendant Guo Meimei. On October 18, Guo Meimei was sentenced to two years and six months in prison and fined 200,000 yuan.
According to the Criminal Law of the People's Republic of China, anyone who mixes harmful substances into food for sale, or deliberately sells such food, can be sentenced to up to five years in prison, and the sentence can be extended for another 10 years if the product causes accident or other damage.
