St. Helena, the island cursed by Napoleon (i) Saint Helena

Saint Helena

A volcanic island in the South Atlantic Ocean, belonging to the United Kingdom, 1950 km from the west coast of Africa and 2900 km from the east coast of South America. St. Helena, together with the Tristan da Cunha Islands to the south, formed the British colony of St. Helena.

On 21 May 1502 Portuguese navigators discovered the island of St. Helena on their way to India. Because May 21 is St. Helena Day (the birthday of St. Helena, mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine), they called the island St. Helena.

There were no indigenous people on the island at that time, and Portugal did not colonize it. Later the Dutch occupied the island between 1645 and 1651, but there was no colonization. In 1659 the British East India Company claimed to occupy the island and began colonizing it. They established a fortress, Jamestown (the capital of present-day St. Helena), where they garrisoned troops.

In 1673 the Dutch attempted to reoccupy st. Helena, but without success. At this time, half of the island's inhabitants were slaves kidnapped from Africa. Before the opening of the Suez Canal, St. Helena was a very important ship dock in the Atlantic Ocean. By 1792 slave life here was very inhumane, and from 1792 onwards there were no new slaves arriving on the island, and the treatment of slaves improved, until all slaves were freed in 1836.

From October 1815, Napoleon was imprisoned on the island and died there in May 1821. During this period, St. Helena was under the jurisdiction of the British Crown. The East India Company then took control of the island, which in 1834 came under the ownership of the British Crown.

With the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 and the spread of steam steamships, fewer and fewer ships came to the island to supply, and St. Helena began to depression. In 1906 the British withdrew all troops stationed on the island.

A Privy Council decree issued in 1966 and entering into force in January 1967 granted St. Helena a certain degree of autonomy, local government and unicameral parliament.
