3.5 Feeding management
3.5.1 Rearing management of larvae
Larval rearing refers to the time from hatching the larvae to pupating, in the incubation tank and feeding tray.
One incubator can incubate 1 to 3 egg-laying trays to screen out the egg jams, but should be stacked in layers, separated by several wooden strips to maintain good ventilation.
Egg screening is carried out before incubation, and when sifting eggs, the feed and other debris in the box are first screened, and then the egg jam paper is put into the incubator for incubation.
The eggs are covered with a layer of vegetable leaves, allowing the hatched larvae to live between the bran and the leaves to maintain the appropriate humidity and allow them to feed freely. This allows the eggs to hatch within 10 d in the incubator to hatch the larvae. Mixed feed can not be added before the 3rd instar stage, but some chopped cabbage leaves or melon peels should be fed appropriately every day.
When the original feed is basically eaten, it is necessary to pass a worm sieve with a pore size of 0.27 mm (50 mesh), sift out the worm feces, the larvae are still put back into the box for feeding, and start feeding, feed 3 times the body weight of the insects mixed feed or wheat bran, and add chopped vegetables and melon peels, feed once every 2 to 3 days, and sift the worms once every 2 to 3 days, and sift the worms once every 2 to 3 days with a pore size of 0.27 mm or 0.38 mm (50 mesh or 40 mesh).
With the increase of age, the amount of food gradually increased, about 6 years old, due to the increase in the size of the larval population, it should be divided into 2 feeding trays.
The feeding density, the amount of insects per plate in summer is 1.5 to 2 kg, which can be doubled in winter than in summer.
The larvae continue to molt and grow, about 50 d, when the body length of the insect is 2 to 3 cm, the color changes from yellowish brown to lighter, the amount of food is reduced, this is the late stage of the mature larva, will soon enter the pupal stage, at this time should be fed a small amount, only once a week, feeding.
