According to the Associated Press, Georgia, former President Jimmy Carter, the longest-running former president in U.S. history, will spend his 97th birthday in a low-key manner at his home in southwest Georgia on Friday.
Deanna Congelio, press secretary at the Carter Center in Atlanta, said he does not plan to make public appearances in the near future due to Carter's elderly disabilities and his continued low profile during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2015, Carter was diagnosed with melanoma, which had spread to the liver and brain, but announced his recovery 4 months after receiving treatment. He later suffered several falls, including a pelvic injury in October 2019. He used a walker during his most recent public appearance. (Compilation / Xiong Wenyuan)
