They have their own communities, languages, and wonderful songs that sound otherworldly, almost heavenly, to everyone lucky enough to hear them. In the 18th and 19th centuries, whales were a very valuable resource of meat, fat and baleen. Unfortunately, this has been overhunted by humans, which has led to the imminent extinction of these large animals. But in the 20th century, commercial whaling was banned. Now we can appreciate these amazing animals living happily and freely in their natural habitat.

The baby whale is probably the smallest whale species on today's list. They prefer to be alone, feeding on small crustaceans and fish to feed themselves. They can weigh a staggering 10 tons and can reach a length of up to 8 meters. Due to their small size (you have to look at them from a whale's point of view, of course), some killer whales practice preying on these great creatures. In 2008, the whale was added to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Despite this, the baby whale is still widely distributed in all oceans and is far from extinct.

The Cypriot whale is the third largest baleen whale in the world, only slightly smaller than its larger relative, the Blue Whale. This baleen whale was one of the main targets of the commercial whaling era, almost contributing to its extinction. Now, these gentle giants are all fine, safe, and can grow up happily to reach their magnificent shape. An adult Stopper whale can grow to 14 - 18 meters long and weigh more than 27 tons. Sai whales are so fond of eating a small fish called cod that they bear the Norwegian name for the fish, Sei Whale. It was a match made in heaven!

This small, warm-loving whale is the last surviving member of the grey whale family. Gray whales are small in size in whale populations, but they are still worth noting. An adult female grey whale can grow up to 15 meters and weigh up to 40 tons. Like other whales, males are usually smaller and shorter than females. Male gray whales can grow up to 14 meters and weigh between 15-30 tons. Gray whales prefer to live in shallow waters, and every summer they migrate from the warmer waters off Mexico to the colder Alaska. Another group lives near North Korea and migrates to the Sea of Okhotsk in the summer.

They can weigh up to 40 tons and can grow to 13 - 14 meters at their peak. These whales are among the most skilled and powerful swimmers among whales, so they sing their magical songs when swimming and traveling through all the oceans.

These whales live in every ocean, but they are far from the polar territories and prefer to live in tropical and temperate waters. You can't blame them! This delicious diet of fatty fish gives these whales enormous size, with a typical Bruce whale growing up to 15 meters long. As for their weight, you can expect an adult whale to weigh as much as a tank, up to 40 tons. These giant whales don't like to leave their homes. Scientists say they may never migrate long distances and live their entire lives in some warm tropical waters.

These whales are huge and dangerous predators. For centuries, sperm whales' fear of the deep sea has fascinated people, and they are even found in Moby Dick. Of all the creatures that have ever lived on this planet, they have the largest brains. Sperm whales love squid and squid. They gain weight in order to survive and need about a ton of food a day. Such a large amount of food helped sperm whales increase their outstanding weight from 35 tons to 45 tons in adulthood and reach 20 meters in length. This species is the largest member of the toothed whale family and is more closely related to dolphins than baleen whales.

They are one of the largest and most dangerous whales in the whale family, and their future seems bright and safe.

Bowhead whales, also known as Arctic whales or Greenland right whales, are brave creatures that live in the cold waters of the Arctic. Under these difficult conditions, the bowhead whale is still surprisingly large, comparable to a blue whale. An adult female bowhead whale can grow up to 22 meters long, while a male whale can grow up to 18 meters long. They are also heavy and can reach an impressive 150 tons in a lifetime. However, the average bowhead whale usually weighs between 75-100 tons. Bowhead whales have a long lifespan, and they may be one of the longest-lived mammals on Earth. The secret must be due to the icy water and shrimp diet, but who knows?

The fin whale is the second longest and most beautiful species of whale in the world, also known as the minke whale and the razor whale. They are their big friend, blue whales, their favorite relatives, and the two are very well-connected, so it's not uncommon to encounter cute hybrids of these two mammals. Fin whales live in all oceans, but they avoid coastal areas. Whales that prefer to live in the northern hemisphere are usually a little smaller than their southern relatives. They can grow up to 23 - 24 meters long and weigh up to 70 tons. Southern fin whales are usually of the same weight, but can reach up to 27 m in length. Fin whales can be as long as blue whales, but this particular minke whale is much slimmer and often weighs even lighter than shorter bowhead whales.

Let's end with the greatest whale, the blue whale. It is a masterpiece of nature and the largest animal ever made on Earth. Yes, even bigger than dinosaurs! The most interesting thing about this monster is that it only eats small animals such as krill, that is, small shrimp-like crustaceans that are no longer than 1 cm long. Of course, blue whales don't lose calories because of this, and in order to get an impressive curve, a whale needs about 4 tons of krill per day. Still, its diet is unsatisfactory (from a human perspective). Of course, an average blue whale can grow up to 33 meters and weigh up to 200 tons in its lifetime. When the baby blue whale is born, it weighs about 3 tons and will increase by almost 90 kilograms a day until its first birthday. Blue whales live in small groups or in pairs, communicating with loud singing and crossing the ocean in search of food. They live almost anywhere in the ocean, except, of course, the cold Arctic Ocean inhabited by bowhead whales.
