Night herons are widely distributed, almost all over the country except in western Tibet, and are more common. It generally inhabits and active wetland habitats such as streams, ponds, rivers, swamps and paddy fields, and feeds mainly on animal foods such as frogs, small fish, shrimps, and aquatic insects. The breeding season is from April to July, usually nesting on a variety of tall trees, nesting in groups, but also often with other herons such as egrets, pond herons, cattleback herons and herons. There are as few as a few to a dozen on the same tree, and as many as dozens or even hundreds of nests. Night herons also have the habit of using old nests.
