Cultural Characteristics and Their Role of Global Cities

Shanghai: A City where Chinese Culture and International Culture Converge

Few cities have radiated their influence to the world as much as Shanghai, as few cities have been and will continue to be, the intersection of Chinese and international cultures. Born in Shanghai 400 years ago, Xu Guangqi was one of the first Chinese to help bring Western technology and culture to China. One of the reasons why the Chinese Communist Party held its first congress in Shanghai 100 years ago may be because Shanghai was first printed in Chinese by two Germans. Shanghai has the world's most modern museums, theaters, concert halls and other cultural facilities. Shanghai's relations with sister cities abroad are booming. Shanghai can create an online portal where visitors can easily get an overview of the city's soft power in a variety of ways, including performances, theater, opera, ballet, concerts, exhibitions, and more. The North Bund is fast becoming a new landmark, where the renovation of traditional industrial buildings is closely linked to modern and innovative applications; the highlights of the building are combined with the park promenade; and the walk along the river is combined with the architecture of learning about the city's new features, and there is no more meaningful thing today than spending a weekend exploring the North Bund.

"Culture is the core and main connotation of urban competition"

Culture is the soul and symbol of a city, the root and source of creation of a city, and has become the core element of urban soft power. Building the soft power of urban culture requires a long period of excavation and accumulation, and the history, tradition and personality characteristics of the city are inherited and preserved. Shanghai Xintiandi's pioneering practice of protecting historical and cultural buildings has broken the development model of urban demolition and construction, becoming a model of urban renewal in Shanghai and one of the world's top 20 cultural landmarks. Shanghai needs to vigorously enhance its cultural attractiveness and cultural influence, improve cultural diversity and cultural vitality, develop core cultural industries with competitive identification advantages, and gradually form a cultural industry chain to enhance the core competitiveness of urban culture.

The People's Nature of Urban Space

"People's cities are built by the people, and people's cities are for the people" is an important part of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. I think this is a point that must have been put forward by the development of the city to this day. I talk about the relationship between the city and the people from several aspects: the fundamental value of the city is to create a livable and workable space environment suitable for people; the city is the most important material carrier of human civilization; urban space should have a human scale; the development of the city should consider fairness; the basic bottom line of the city is the safety and resilience of the urban space; the urban culture includes the culture of tallness, but also the culture of people's daily lives. All of this is not only top-down, but also bottom-up, so that every citizen has the opportunity to participate.

Design, Shanghai and Urban Life

I lived near Tongji University and was later invited to do the NICE 2035 project. We have implemented part of the project - "common kitchen". I think that this kind of urban design will become a new form now and in the future, where people can communicate and hold activities in such a space. Different classes can come to such a space to experience life. Shanghai has become a place of attraction, curiosity, energy and vitality for me, and Shanghai is the most attractive place in the world.

In the guest dialogue session, Bao Yaming, researcher of the Institute of Literature of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences and executive director of the Urban Cultural Innovation Research Institute of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, shared his insights with the guests around the theme of "Urban Memory and Shanghai Culture".

There are many cultural symbols in Shanghai, and there are many interesting historical memories. In the process of shanghai becoming a global outstanding city, how to tap its own value and resources is a particularly meaningful thing.

What have I learned in the international luxury industry? One of them is the relationship between inheritance and innovation. Shanghai is a city full of heritage and innovation, so that it can have such vitality and constantly maintain youth.

Shanghai's characteristics are more abstract, and I boil it down to the city's diversity, mobility, creativity, and landscape. The history of Shanghai is the process of image recording, full of historical memory.
