On March 25th, the "Kung Fu - Exhibition of the 20th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Basic Department of Modeling Disciplines" was opened at the CAFA Art Museum. The exhibition is divided into six sections: Virtue, Plain, Color, Line, Extension and Genealogy, presenting the Lide Tree, Drawing Teaching, Color Teaching, Life Practice, Extended Curriculum, and Historical Genealogy, exhibiting more than 100 outstanding works retained over the years, comprehensively displaying the teaching achievements of the Basic Department of Modeling Discipline of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in the past 20 years, and exhibiting the fine works of the Collection of the Central Academy of Fine Arts and the teachers' works of the Basic Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts over the years.
The thick soil of the "foundation" was forged by generations of artists
In 2001, the Central Academy of Fine Arts moved to the new campus of Wangjing Huajiadi, and in the same year, under the initiative of the old principal Jin Shangyi and others, the Modeling Basic Department was formally established. In the past 20 years, the successive leadership teams and all the teachers of the Basic Department of Plastic Arts have adhered to the century-old modeling tradition of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, continuously explored and expanded the basic teaching of modeling, and under the guidance of the teaching concept of "wide foundation", seven professional courses in teaching have been formed - drawing and color as the core courses, and calligraphy, line drawing, clay sculpture, anatomy and perspective as the support courses, and always working hard to consolidate the foundation of modeling and cultivate students' comprehensive literacy.
Fan Di'an, president of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, said in his opening speech: "Around the two words 'foundation', there is the meaning of historical periods, and there are new meanings that are constantly expanding. Today, through the exhibition of the 20th anniversary of the Basic Department of Plastic Arts, we are going to further understand the value, significance and development direction of the foundation. Since they first stayed at the Central Academy of Fine Arts as teachers, they have attached great importance to the foundation and injected great efforts into basic teaching, thus continuously consolidating the infrastructure. Before the reform and opening up, and even before the 21st century, the plastic discipline we are talking about today was almost all the disciplines of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. Li Ronglin, professor of the Basic Department of Modeling Discipline of CAFA, pointed out that in the past 20 years since its establishment, the Basic Department of Modeling has summarized and sorted out the tradition of color teaching in the Academy of Fine Arts, and at the same time, according to the characteristics of talent training in the new era and the aesthetic requirements of the new era, it has gradually formed a color teaching mode belonging to the Basic Department of Modeling. Through the sketching of objective objects, including portraits, still lifes, landscapes, human bodies, etc., students can understand the laws of color and can combine color and shape at a higher level.

Li Ronglin introduced that outer light sketching is to go outdoors to feel the kaleidoscopic and rich colors of nature. In two weeks, students will cultivate their ability to select and organize scenes, and improve their sensitivity to color observation. Students grasp the basic relationship between cold and warm in the performance of external light, especially the observation, search and grasp of the basic relationship between sky, earth and scenery; further train students to accurately use color to express the hues formed by different weather, use color to express large spaces, and have corresponding personal expression methods for pictures and different objects.
The group of small sketches on display this time is the study work of the students who meet their hearts and witness the paintings in the outdoors, the brushstrokes are simple and lovely, and they are full of natural fresh and beautiful breath.

The exhibition specially opens a section, with the theme of "Yan", showing that in addition to sketching and color, it integrates a wide basic curriculum system of anatomy, clay sculpture, perspective, calligraphy, line drawing, etc.

So I very much support Mr. Jin Shangyi's decision to broaden the foundation. Including from the perspective of painting professionals, if you understand sculpture, you can grasp the essence of modeling. You have no interest in the language of sculpture, no basic knowledge, then your painting is also boring. ”
The exhibition also exhibits the classic works from the collection of the Central American Art Museum, Xu Beihong, Gu Yuan, Wu Zuoren, Wang Shikuo, Ye Qianyu, Li Hua, Jin Shangyi, Zhan Jianjun, Sun Jingbo, Yu Hong, Liu Xiaodong, Su Xinping, and all of them have a good composition.
