Beijing, October 28 (China News Network) -- On october 28, the 25th Cross-Strait Water Conservancy Science and Technology Exchange Seminar was held in a combination of online and offline.

The symposium was hosted by the Chinese Academy of Water Sciences and National Taiwan University, co-organized by the American-Chinese Water Conservancy Association, and hosted by the National Field Science Observation and Research Station for Ecological Hydrology in the Northern Foothills of the Yin Mountains in Inner Mongolia and the Institute of Hydraulic Engineering of National Taiwan University. More than 500 people from the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, the Taiwan Affairs Office of the Ministry of Water Resources, river basin agencies, local water conservancy departments, and the competent water conservancy departments of the Taiwan region, as well as scholars and graduate students from scientific research units, universities, and enterprises on both sides of the strait, and experts from the American-Chinese Water Conservancy Association, attended the meeting through offline and online means.

Chi Xinyang, director of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the Ministry of Water Resources, said in his opening speech that strengthening cross-strait cooperation and exchanges in the field of water conservancy science and technology is conducive to continuously improving the level of water conservancy scientific research and innovation capabilities on both sides of the strait and jointly solving complex challenges and water problems encountered in economic and social development. The mainland attaches great importance to water conservancy work and has made historic achievements in ensuring flood prevention safety, drinking water safety, food security, water supply safety and ecological security. In the future, under the water management idea of "water-saving priority, spatial balance, systematic governance, and two-handed force", we will improve the flood control engineering system in the river basin, implement major national water network projects, restore the ecological environment of rivers and lakes, promote the construction of smart water conservancy, establish and improve water-saving system policies, and strengthen institutional mechanisms and rule of law management as the implementation path, and promote the high-quality development of water conservancy in the new stage.

Peng Jing, vice president of the Chinese Academy of Water Sciences, said that despite the continuous impact of the epidemic, water conservancy experts on both sides of the strait met in the cloud and still deeply felt the enthusiasm and deep friendship between the two sides of the strait to talk about water conservancy science and technology. The "Cross-Strait Water Conservancy Science and Technology Exchange Seminar" is one of the fixed exchange mechanisms for cross-strait water conservancy science and technology exchanges, and has received widespread attention from the cross-strait water conservancy circles since the first session in 1995. Nearly 5,000 delegates have participated in the seminar, exchanged more than 2,000 papers, and organized more than 90 engineering and technical visits. Over the past 24 years, colleagues in the water conservancy circles on both sides of the strait have cooperated sincerely, made joint efforts, persevered, and continued to develop and deepen. This seminar focused on the hot issues and focus of water conservancy science and technology on both sides of the strait under the new situation, set up different theme reports and topic reports, and fully demonstrated the new concepts, new ideas and new practices of water conservancy science and technology.

In his speech, Professor Zhang Cangrong of National Taiwan University spoke highly of the valuable platform built by the previous seminars to promote cross-strait water conservancy scientific and technological exchanges and experience sharing, he said that under the influence of climate change, this year's Taiwan region is facing a major drought in the spring and waterlogging after June, and looks forward to exchanging and sharing on cross-strait water conservancy scientific research and management under the new situation through the seminar platform, so that water conservancy science and technology can play a greater role in social development.

Professor Duan Guohong, President of the American-Chinese Water Conservancy Association, thanked the seminar for building a platform for mutual learning and mutual promotion. Yin Ruiping, director of the Institute of Animal Husbandry of the Chinese Academy of Water Sciences, looks forward to strengthening cross-strait cooperation in the field of grassland ecological protection based on field observation stations.

This seminar set topics around the current water conservancy hot issues of common concern on both sides of the strait, such as "emergency management of drought and flood disasters and sponge city construction", "smart water conservancy construction under climate change", "green development of hydropower under the double carbon target", and invited outstanding water conservancy experts and Chinese experts in the United States on both sides of the strait to share the latest research results, jointly discuss cross-strait water conservancy hot issues, and provide suggestions for the development of water conservancy on both sides of the strait.
