1. "Overland Boat"
Filmed in the 1980s, Herzog's masterpiece is about a businessman named Fitzgerald who makes ice in Peru, and after listening to the performance of the famous tenor Caruso, he was so excited that he decided to build a grand theater in the town where he lived, in order to invite Caruso to perform. Building a theater costs a lot of money. So Fitzgerald began lobbying the wealthy businessmen, but no one wanted to pay for the plan that sounded like a fantasy. In their eyes, Fitzgerald's move was crazy.
2. "Farewell to Hamburg"
The film tells the story of three good friends who live in Hamburg, Walter, Rico and Freud, who live every day in skyscrapers and fast food restaurants. All three of them were in their early twenties and dreamed of living different lives with each other. Suddenly, one day, Freud found a job on a cargo ship about to sail to Singapore. So the night before departure, three good friends got together for the most memorable night of their lives. It's a sad comedy about friendship in the '90s.
3. "Eavesdropping Storm"
"Eavesdropping Storm" depicts East Germany in the eighties, where the NSA played an important and special role in an era of self-peril. The film's protagonist, Wessler, is an experienced eavesdropper serving him. He is now on the front line to train new intelligence officers, but at the invitation of a former colleague who is already a leader, he has re-emerged to spy on a couple of writers and actors. "Eavesdropping Storm" is the most successful film in Germany in 2006, receiving 11 nominations at the Rolla Awards, known as the "German Oscars", and winning 7 important awards such as Best Picture and Best Screenplay. This is also a European film that has shocked the world again after "Underground", "Goodbye, Lenin", "The Destruction of empires", and "Million Killing Game".
4. The Destruction of the Empire
The Destruction of the Reich focuses on Hitler's last 12 days, and the film is partly based on historical works, and partly on the memoirs of the film's clue characters, Hitler's secretary, and other historical witnesses. Most of the characters in the film, from Hitler and Goebbels to the electricians in the wolf's lair bunkers and the dutiful military doctors on the streets of Berlin, are real people alive. The end of the film uses subtitles to explain the fate of each of these characters, which brings me a sense of reality and the feeling of fate that other World War II films cannot do.
5. "Goodbye Lenin"
The film is very touching, not only because of the feeling of laughter and tears, but also because as a film set in the reunification of East and West Germany, the film does not focus on portraying ideological differences, making too many satires or defending one side, but focuses on the emotions of ordinary people, the emotions in the world. The whole film is full of memories and ridicule, but there is no trace of impetuosity and abruptness, and the warm and helpless extension of the camera to a territory without an answer.
