Memoirs of Wang Jialiang, Chapter 28: Comeback

1. Laxity

When people are struggling hard, no matter how tired they are, they will not shrink back, but once the goal is achieved, they will be like a deflated leather ball, and they will no longer be able to lift their spirits.

In 1990, the Heilongjiang team won the men's team and individual championships, and Zhao Guorong and I, as well as other team members, had a feeling of relief, and the nervous nerves could no longer be tightened, which also laid the groundwork for the Heilongjiang team to "lose Maicheng" in the 1991 national competition.

After winning the championship, Zhao Guorong's socializing increased significantly, and he was later invited to lecture by Japanese friends, so the time for practicing chess was relatively small. And I saw that the women's team had grown from scratch in recent years, and the team members had gradually matured, so I shifted the focus of training to the women's team and ignored the men's team.

According to the requirements of the team competition, the women's team had three members to participate, but at that time, we only had Zhang Xiaoxia and Zhang Mei, and there was still one person left, so I had to look around for good seedlings again. At this time, someone told me that at the Harbin Workers Chess Tournament that was being held, there was a girl named Zhang Huijuan who had good chess skills. Later, I made a special trip to the field and thought that she was good at killing chess, but she was older and had little room for development. But there is really no better candidate than her.

After the women's team was formed, Sun Zhiwei presided over the daily training, and I would take a few days a week to play chess with the female players, during which time the women's team grew rapidly.

In October 1991, the national team competition opened in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, heilongjiang men's team as the previous champion, other teams are particularly important, each battle is a real knife and real gun hard battle, there is no trick to speak of. Last time, Fu general Sun Shouhua was also "exposed in its original form", losing 13 rounds of chess, dragging its hind legs, and finally the Heilongjiang team was squeezed out of the top six.

However, the bad luck did not end, in the subsequent individual competition, Zhao Guorong's state was extremely bad, the results were also plummeted, even the top 16 did not go in, "the champion did not enter the l6 in the past year" became the biggest news in the chess world that year, which was also the worst performance of Zhao Guorong since the arts. Fortunately, the performance of the women's team is acceptable, Zhang Xiaoxia and Zhang Mei are a third and a ninth, which has saved some face for the Heilongjiang team. And in the following years, the women's team has been doing well, repeatedly reaching the top six.

2. Win another laurel

Sometimes failure is also necessary, and it is like a good medicine that can better motivate people's determination to continue to struggle. In the face of the fiasco Heilongjiang team, they re-reflected deeply and were determined to fight a turnaround battle in 1992.

Soon in 1992, the team competition was played in Fuzhou, Jiangxi, and the men's team was once again squeezed out of the top six due to its overall weakness, but the women's team performed well in three pieces and won the fourth place. After a year of rest in the individual competition, Zhao Guorong once again showed strong strength and won the championship, and the Heilongjiang team has come out of the shadow of defeat.

3. Team Competition

Fast forward to October 1992 and I turned 60. According to the regulations, I should be demobilized and returned to the field - retired, but the organization decided to let me hold out for another year in order to prepare for the 1993 Seventh Games, and continue to be responsible for the training of the chess academy. So in order to have a good performance in heilongjiang at the Seventh Games, I returned to the field to participate in the team competition in 1993.

In 1993, the team competition was held in Nanjing, and the Heilongjiang team was dominated by Zhao Guorong, and I played two, and the third and fourth stations were Zhang Xiaoping and Zhang Yingfu. This time it was much stronger than the previous two years, and in the end we finished second.

4. Comeback

In the team competition, I felt that my form was OK, and there was almost no possibility of participating in the competition in the future, so I resolutely participated in the individual competition held in Qingdao in August.

At the beginning of the tournament, my momentum was good, and I achieved a two-win, two-draw record in the first four rounds, with Zhao Guorong and Lü Qin leading the way. At this time, many media have published articles on "Wang Jialiang's sword is not old", and I am also full of confidence and determination to impact the top three again.

In the fifth round, I met Dalian Bu Fengbo with my backhand, and we both started with a middle artillery cross-cart seven-way horse against a screen horse, and I had reversed the middle of the game and achieved a certain advantage, so I let go of the middle pawn to seek a quick decision. In fact, at this time, the best way should go like 3 into 5 horses, so that the red side can only flee the battlefield with seven retreats and nine horses, and my rear will have no worries.

Bu Fengbo reacted extremely quickly, immediately discovered my mistake, immediately drove two into four to catch my soldier horn cannon, after my branch, and then rode seven into nine elephants, and after I entered 3 into 1, he retreated seven times. After two rounds like this, I thought that my advantage was still very large, so I decided to abandon the elephant and continue to charge, but I did not expect that the red side would preemptively kill after a few steps.

After losing to Bu Fengbo, my mood was greatly affected, and I felt that my energy and physical strength were obviously unable to keep up. Since I could not get the winning position, in the next few games, I played very generally, and there were more chess pieces, and finally the battle against Fu Guangming was a hasty ending, and as a result, I just saved my capital and won the 23rd place. Zhao Guorong performed fairly well, winning fifth, and Zhang Mei won the third place in the women's group.
