GM has partnered with WiTricity to develop a wireless charging system

Gestapo Automotive News General Motors and WiTricity are working together on the research and development of wireless charging systems for electric vehicles. WiTricity is a startup based in Boston.

GM executives confirmed that the company plans to test the wireless charging system on WiTricity's prototypes. When the user drives the vehicle into the garage, the electric vehicle can automatically receive power through the charging source at the bottom of the vehicle.

Pamela Fletcher, GM's chief executive engineer, said: "Customers have been interested in wireless charging technology. ”

"After testing the wireless charging system in the WiTricity prototype, we were able to determine that its wireless charging system met the relevant standards previously proposed by the industry, and the entire automotive industry and consumers could benefit from it."

According to WiTricity, which has a growing global customer base in consumer electronics, automotive, medical devices and industrial markets, the company is looming as an industry leader in wireless power transfer over distance.

The company has signed cooperation agreements with Toyota, Delphi, Tokyo Denki Kagaku, Ishikawajima Harima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (IHI) and BRUSA. WiTricity is also working directly with the world's leading automakers to raise the global standard for wireless charging systems.

Alex Gruzen, CEO of WiTricity, said: "Electric vehicles have become the core direction of the future of mobility, further exploring the electric vehicle market, and the convenience of wireless charging has also helped people to further embrace electric vehicles. ”

Grutzen said: "In the process of R&D, we are honored to work with GM. Based on industry standards, wireless charging of electric vehicles is the trend of the times, and this technology will be applied to future autonomous and fully autonomous vehicles, promoting the global popularity of electric vehicles equipped with wireless charging systems, and realizing our company's grand vision. ”

With flexible parking options and wireless charging experiences, WiTricity aims to increase acceptance of electric vehicles. WiTricity is currently working with several major automakers and Tier 1 supply chains to prepare for the commercialization of wireless charging for next-generation electric vehicles.

Grützen stressed that in order to better determine the actual performance of the technology and understand the technical challenges faced in the integration of vehicle technology, GM plans to provide users with multiple electrification solutions, including multiple charging experiences.

In a joint statement, the two companies said that the focus of the prototype test is on the wireless charging system, which provides two charging rates of 7.7 kW and 11 kW, can charge electric vehicles (BEVs) and Extended Range electric vehicles, and its technical specifications meet the international standards proposed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).
