Nanning, March 17 (Reporter Li Zhong) On the 17th, the 2021 China-Vietnam Cross-border Joint Conservation exchange meeting on biodiversity jointly sponsored by the Bangliang Gibbon National Nature Reserve in Guangxi, China and the Chongqing Gibbon Nature Reserve in Gaoping, Vietnam was held in Jingxi City, Guangxi Province, and the two protected areas negotiated the establishment of a cross-border joint technical steering committee to better protect the Eastern Black-crowned Gibbon and its habitat. According to reports, the two protected areas are connected by mountains and rivers, and are the only home of the world's critically endangered species, the Eastern Black-crowned Gibbon. The Eastern Black-crowned Gibbon was once thought to be extinct, but was only rediscovered in 2002, and there are currently just over 130 remaining populations. In order to effectively protect the eastern black-crowned gibbon and its habitat, in 2011, the two protected areas signed a memorandum of cooperation to actively carry out cross-border cooperative conservation activities.
Over the past 10 years, with the common goal of protecting the Eastern Black-crowned Gibbon, the two sides have carried out joint patrol and law enforcement activities on a regular basis, protecting the integrity of the cross-border East Black-crowned Gibbon habitat, and the population of the Eastern Black-crowned Gibbon has gradually increased. Survey data show that the population of eastern black-crowned gibbons in the Bangliang Gibbon Nature Reserve in Guangxi has increased from 19 in 3 groups when the reserve was first established in 2009 to 31 in 5 groups at present.
