Mr. Mu Jingyuan regarded the study of the history of the volunteer army as his life's mission

Mr. Mu Jingyuan

On February 9 this year (the 28th day of the lunar month), Mr. Mu Jingyuan, a famous volunteer army research expert in Liaoning Province, former associate professor of Bohai University, and life honorary president of the Jinzhou Volunteer Army Research Association, and 97 years old, passed away unexpectedly!

After the bad news came out, the Propaganda Department of the Municipal CPC Committee and the Municipal Federation of Social Sciences sent leaders in charge to mourn; colleagues from Bohai University and the Jinzhou Volunteer Army Research Association, with an extremely sad mood, went to the Lingtang to bid a final farewell to the elderly with a basket of flowers in their hands; experts and scholars in the field of history in Liaoning Province sent condolence telegrams one after another to express their condolences, and some experts said in the telegram: "Elder Mu's death is a great loss to the study of the history of the volunteer army!" Liu Yuxin, former deputy director of the Cultural and Historical Committee of the Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and a student of Mu Lao, wrote in his elegy: I have personally witnessed Mr. Mu's contribution to the literary and historical work of the CPPCC, and he is the only expert who has edited two series of literary and historical materials for the Jinzhou Municipal CPPCC. In the condolences, he highly appreciated Elder Mu's noble sentiments, rigorous study style and family and country feelings.

A 97-year-old old man with a back, an ordinary university associate professor, whose death can cause such a big response is closely related to his position in the field of history and his contribution to the study of red culture in Jinzhou.

Before his death, Elder Mu made great achievements in the study of the history of the Volunteer Army, and occupied a place in the historiography of Liaoning Province, especially he made outstanding contributions to the research and publicity of the red culture of the Jinzhou Volunteer Army. He was the first person to propose that Jinzhou was the birthplace of the Volunteer Army and the "Volunteer Army March"! His lifelong dream is to wear this laurel crown on the head of the hero Jincheng and add icing on the cake to the heroic city of Jinzhou. He fought for half a century to realize this dream. Just on October 20 last year, when Chairman Jia Wei of the Municipal Federation of Social Sciences visited him, he still remembered to build Jinzhou into a heroic city.

Mu Lao began to devote himself to the study of the history of the anti-Japanese volunteer army in western Liaoning in 1981 when he investigated the annihilation of the Koga Wing of the Japanese Army by the Jinxi Volunteer Army. He used more than half a year to travel all over the small and large townships of Gangtun in Jinxi to hold forums, interviewed the surviving volunteer soldiers and witnesses, and left a valuable oral recording historical material, and his paper "The Beginning and End of the Jinxi People's Annihilation of the Koga Cavalry Wing of the Japanese Army" was reprinted by many historical publications, and called this battle the "Great Victory of Jianjiatun".

It was also during this investigation that he discovered that the Northeast Anti-Japanese Volunteer Army had originated in Jinzhou. When he consulted the materials on the great victory of Jian Jiatun in the libraries and archives of the province, he unexpectedly found that there were many records in Japanese historical materials that Jinzhou was the source and base of the "bandits" (the Japanese army's contemptuous name for the volunteer army) -- "Because the Jinzhou regime of the former Northeast Army is now using Jinzhou as a base area to manipulate bandits to disturb the eastern province", "It goes without saying that all these actions, its source of action is undoubtedly in Jinzhou", "because Jinzhou is the source of the violent bandits, so the Kwantung Army bombed Jinzhou on October 8"...

Seeing these historical materials, Mu Lao is like a treasure, because these negative teaching materials provide favorable evidence for Jinzhou to be the birthplace of the anti-Japanese volunteer army! In the 1980s, the library did not have a photocopier, he could only copy word by word, often staying in the library for a day, a loaf of bread and a glass of water was a lunch.

Mr. Mu Jingyuan regarded the study of the history of the volunteer army as his life's mission

Mr. Mu Jingyuan consulted the materials at the Jinzhou Municipal Library

Since then, a sense of mission and responsibility has risen in his heart! He decided to focus on the history of the Liaoxi Volunteer Army centered on Jinzhou, and to make the topic of Jinzhou the birthplace of the Anti-Japanese Volunteer Army practical and large.

When a job is integrated into the mission is a career, and when a life of ordinary is accompanied by persistence is extraordinary.

In those years, Mu Lao, like a "demon", devoted all his energy to the study of the history of the Volunteer Army in western Liaoning, and while translating Japanese materials, he consulted the historical materials of the Volunteer Army in Western Liaoning, interviewed the descendants and informants of the Volunteer Army, and even went to Xi'an to interview Xiong Fei, commander-in-chief of the Fourth Military Region of the Volunteer Army, and Zhang Haitao, deputy commander of the Twelfth Road Volunteer Army. In order to compete with life for time, only sleep 5 or 6 hours a day, Mu Lao's persistence and fighting spirit is the best interpretation of "horses do not whip themselves"!

A person who takes his life to the mission, no matter how great the difficulties are. In 2000, he and Bai Junshan co-authored the monograph "Song of the Anti-Japanese Volunteer Army in Western Liaoning", which was finally completed, and the Jinzhou Municipal CPPCC compiled it into the 20th series of literary and historical materials, which is the first work in the northeast region to more systematically show the brilliant achievements of various volunteer armies in western Liaoning in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the heroic deeds of the generals of the volunteer army, as well as a masterpiece of Jinzhou's important historical position in the fourteen-year War of Resistance.

In the process of studying the Volunteer Army in Western Liaoning, Mu Lao found that Jinzhou was the source of the material for the creation of the "March of the Volunteer Army", and then he attacked this topic non-stop...

At that time, Mu Lao's research results attracted the attention of the Jinzhou Municipal Party Committee, the Jinzhou Municipal Government, the Jinzhou Municipal CPPCC Committee and relevant departments.

At the beginning of 2000, Li Jixue, then vice mayor, gave instructions on the proposal of "Building a Memorial Exhibition Hall for the Anti-Japanese Volunteer Army in Western Liaoning" submitted by members of the CPPCC Municipal Committee on the basis of Mu Lao's research results, and then the Municipal Bureau of Culture held a press conference on "Accepting Professor Mu Jingyuan's Donation of Materials and Books for the Anti-Japanese Volunteer Army in Western Liaoning" and donating more than 40 pieces of historical materials, tapes and photos of the Anti-Japanese Volunteer Army in Western Liaoning that he had collected for many years; at the end of 2001, "Song of the Anti-Japanese Volunteer Army in Western Liaoning" was donated free of charge. The exhibition hall was officially opened at jinzhou museum. This is the first exhibition hall in the province to reflect the history of the Liaoning Volunteer Army's War of Resistance, and it is listed as a demonstration base for national defense education and a patriotic education base in Liaoning Province.

Mr. Mu Jingyuan regarded the study of the history of the volunteer army as his life's mission

In 2001, the Jinzhou Municipal Government created the exhibition hall of "Song of the Anti-Japanese Volunteer Army in Western Liaoning" (Mr. Mu Jingyuan in the middle)

During this period, Mu Lao's research results received special attention from the news media, and media reporters in the province wrote many articles in the newspapers by interviewing Mu Lao and writing many articles around the thesis that Jinzhou was the birthplace of the volunteer army. For example, the "Huashang Morning Post" published articles written by reporter Xia Tian entitled "The Anti-Japanese Volunteer Army First Built Jinzhou," and the "Jinzhou Daily" successively published articles written by reporters Jiang Jinping and Guo Qingquan entitled "Jinzhou and Western Liaoning Are the Birthplace of the Volunteer Army" and "Jinzhou is the Birthplace of the Volunteer Army." CCTV, Liaoning, and Jinzhou Television Stations and relevant departments all looked to Mu Lao for historical materials when shooting special films on the Anti-Japanese War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression in Western Liaoning. For a while, Elder Mu was very busy.

With the passage of time, Elder Mu gradually felt inadequate, so he came up with the idea of establishing an society to absorb more experts and scholars to study together. At the beginning of 2011, Mu Lao and Mr. Yu Dequan each paid more than 10,000 yuan and collected a registered capital of 30,000 yuan, and the "Jinzhou Northeast Anti-Japanese Volunteer Army Research Association" was officially established. At the age of 87, Mu Lao was the oldest president of the Jinzhou Community Organization.

Soon after the establishment of the research association, it received the attention of the Propaganda Department of the Municipal PARTY Committee, and Luo Guanhua, then vice minister of the study, personally took command and instructed Kong Xiangwu, director of the Propaganda Department, to organize experts and scholars of the research association to further excavate historical materials on the basis of Mu Lao's research in the past 40 years, so as to make the evidence of Jinzhou's assertion that Jinzhou is the birthplace of the Anti-Japanese Volunteer Army and the "March of the Volunteer Army" more substantial. On June 19, 2012, sponsored by the Propaganda Department of the Municipal Party Committee, the Municipal Bureau of Culture and Broadcasting, the Municipal Federation of Social Sciences, the Party History Research Office of the Municipal Party Committee, and the Municipal Customs Work Committee; and the "Jinzhou is the Birthplace of the Anti-Japanese Volunteer Army and the Birthplace of the National Anthem" exhibition, which was hosted by the Municipal Volunteer Army Research Association, the Municipal Library, and the Municipal Museum, wang Wenquan, then secretary of the Municipal Party Committee, as well as leaders of the People's Congress, the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, the Propaganda Department, the garrison, and retired veteran cadres, all attended the opening ceremony; on July 3, Jinzhou Daily published a full-page exhibition by Luo Guanhua, Mu Jingyuan and 13 other experts and scholars signed the "Jinzhou - Anti-Japanese Volunteer Army and the Birthplace of the National Anthem" research report. Subsequently, Jinzhou Daily opened a column and used 10 months to systematically publish articles on the volunteer army and the birthplace of the national anthem in 195 issues.

Mr. Mu Jingyuan regarded the study of the history of the volunteer army as his life's mission

In the early winter of 2013, Mu Jingyuan (second from left) conducted an interview with Zhao Fumin (first from right) to learn about the excavation of the "Oath Song of the Volunteer Army" (the author Zhang Guizhi in the middle)

This series of measures by the Propaganda Department of the Municipal Party Committee has aroused strong repercussions inside and outside the province. On June 26 of the same year, Liaoning Daily published an article by reporter Zhu Zhonghe, "Birthplace of the National Anthem: Jinzhou Shines a New Cultural Business Card", which read: "This shows that the study of the birthplace is no longer just a non-governmental action, but has become another measure for Jinzhou to focus on building a famous cultural city, and it is also another cultural business card that shines out to the outside world." In 2014, a reporter from the People's Liberation Army Daily published an article in the newspaper entitled "< March of the Volunteer Army> Sung From Here" through an interview with Mu Lao.

The old Ji Futuo, determined to be in a thousand miles. Elder Mu did not indulge in the achievements he had made, but led the experts and scholars of the research association to continue their in-depth research. During this period, the two monographs edited by him, "The March of the Anti-Japanese Volunteer Army and the Volunteer Army", "The Origin of the National Anthem and the Chronicle of the Jinzhou Volunteer Army", and his personal compilation of the "Translation of the Manchurian Incident" were officially published, of which "The March of the Anti-Japanese Volunteer Army and the < Volunteer Army>" was compiled into the 31st series of literary and historical materials by the Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. By the end of 2020, the experts and scholars of the Volunteer Army Research Association have published 247 academic articles in national, provincial and municipal newspapers and periodicals, and 11 of them have won awards in the national, provincial and municipal governments, among which the paper "Jinzhou is the birthplace of the March> of the Anti-Japanese Volunteer Army and the < Volunteer Army" collectively created by the Research Association won the third prize of the 16th Jinzhou Philosophical and Social Science Achievement Award; assisted CCTV and more than 10 provincial and municipal television stations to produce 48 episodes of TV news films and documentaries with the theme of the Anti-Japanese War of Resistance in Western Liaoning. To this end, the Jinzhou Volunteer Army Research Association has won the title of provincial and municipal advanced society for many times, and has been rated as an advanced unit of the national social science organization. In recognition of Mu Lao's significant contributions, the Municipal Federation of Social Sciences introduced his research results on a special page at the social science achievements display base in East Lake Park.

In 2015, with the assistance of Shi Baoyu, vice chairman of the Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, the municipal government funded by the Propaganda Department of the Municipal Party Committee, the Cultural and Historical Committee of the Municipal Cppcc Committee, the Municipal Federation of Social Sciences, the Municipal Volunteer Army Research Association, and the Municipal Garden Group, the exhibition hall of "The Founding Place of the Anti-Japanese Volunteer Army" was built at the site of the former Northeast Jiaotong University Volunteer Army, which comprehensively displayed the heroic deeds of the Liaoning Volunteer Army, and the anti-Japanese beacons in Western Liaoning converged between the White Mountains and black waters into a rolling torrent of armed resistance against Japan of the northeast people.

There is a plane tree at home, and he is worried about the phoenix. In 2015, in order to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Xinhua Xinhua Net, Xinhua Army Network, Jinzhou Municipal Party Committee, Municipal Government, and Jinzhou Military Sub-district hosted the "Father's Battle Flag - Northeast Anti-Japanese Volunteer Army Anti-Japanese Resistance Army Anti-Japanese Relics Search Large-scale Activity Launching Ceremony" held in Jinzhou, on that day, the 91-year-old Mu Lao stood on the podium with a strong spirit and reported to the conference the research results of the "two birthplaces", which won bursts of applause... The state-level media sent more than 10 interview teams to Jinzhou to interview the research results of the "two birthplaces", and many state-level media reported on it.

Although Elder Mu died, he left valuable research results on the red culture of the Volunteer Army to Jincheng, and also left rich historical resources for the Jinzhou Volunteer Army Research Association that he personally founded. In order to make full use of the platform of the Anti-Japanese War Site of Northeast Jiaotong University and fully display the two research results of Jinzhou as the birthplace of the anti-Japanese volunteer army and the source of the material for the creation of the "March of the Volunteer Army", this year under the guidance of the Municipal Federation of Social Sciences, the experts and scholars of the Volunteer Army Research Association were responsible for writing the outline of the exhibition, re-arranged the original exhibition hall, and expanded a new exhibition hall. The research results of the source of the material for the creation of the "March of the Volunteer Army" highlight the ideological mobilization and organizational leadership of the Communist Party of China against the anti-Japanese volunteer army in western Liaoning in the early stage of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, reveal the role of the Communist Party of China as the mainstay of the War of Resistance, and is a propaganda and education base for carrying forward the spirit of patriotism.

Today, it has become the Jinzhou Research Base of the China Anti-Corruption League Research Center, the Jinzhou Social Science Popularization Base, the Jinzhou Writers Association Creation Base, as well as the social practice base and patriotism education base of Nankai University and Dalian University of Technology, Bohai University, Jinzhou Normal College, and Jinzhou Middle School.

If Mr. Mu Jingyuan had known about the underground, he would certainly be pleased that the people who would come after him would spare no effort to continue to complete his unfinished business!
